This Is Bigger Than Me

Have you ever faced something that felt too big for you?

A diagnosis you didn’t expect. A relationship you don’t know how to repair. A financial situation you can’t see your way out of. A calling you don’t feel qualified for. A battle in your mind that keeps coming back.

Some battles are simply bigger than our ability to handle alone.

That’s exactly where King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah found themselves in 2 Chronicles 20. A massive enemy army was already marching toward them.

They were outnumbered, outmatched, and running out of time.

But what looked like the end of their story became the beginning of one of the greatest victories they had ever experienced.

And it teaches us what to do when the battle is bigger than us.

Respond in Faith Before You React in Fear

When Jehoshaphat heard that a vast army was coming, Scripture tells us that he was alarmed.

He felt fear.

But he didn’t allow fear to determine his response.

“Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the LORD, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah.” — 2 Chronicles 20:3

Faith isn’t the absence of fear. Faith is refusing to let fear take the lead.

Some of our biggest mistakes happen when we allow temporary feelings to make permanent decisions. Fear tells us to panic, run, quit, retaliate, or take control.

But Jehoshaphat did something different.

He prayed.

He fasted.

He sought God.

You can feel fear and still walk by faith. The question isn’t whether you’re afraid. The question is what you do with your fear.

When the battle gets bigger, let your prayers get bigger too.

Look Up Before You Look Around

Something interesting happens when Jehoshaphat begins to pray.

He doesn’t start by telling God how big the enemy is.

He starts by reminding himself how big God is.

“LORD, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.” — 2 Chronicles 20:6

Before Jehoshaphat measured the threat, he measured God.

That matters because whatever receives our attention tends to become bigger in our perspective.

If all we think about is the problem, the problem begins to consume our vision. We rehearse it, analyze it, talk about it, and imagine everything that could go wrong.

Fear measures the size of the problem against the size of our ability.

Faith measures the size of the problem against the size of our God.

Eventually Jehoshaphat acknowledges reality:

“We have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” — 2 Chronicles 20:12

That may be one of the most honest prayers we can pray: God, I don’t have enough. I don’t know what to do. But my eyes are on You.

You don’t have to pretend the battle is small. You just have to remember that God is bigger.

Worship Before You Win

God responds to Judah’s prayer with an incredible promise:

“Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” — 2 Chronicles 20:15

Their circumstances hadn’t changed yet.

The enemy was still coming.

The battle was still in front of them.

But they worshiped anyway.

The next morning, Jehoshaphat did something that made absolutely no sense from a military perspective: he sent worshipers ahead of the army.

They walked toward the battlefield singing:

“Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever.” — 2 Chronicles 20:21

Then Scripture says:

“As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir...” — 2 Chronicles 20:22

They won the spiritual victory before they ever arrived at the fight.

That’s what prayer and worship do.

Sometimes prayer changes the situation.

But often, prayer changes us before it changes the situation.

It shifts our perspective. It moves our eyes from what we cannot control to the God who is still in control.

Worship isn’t something we save for after the victory.

We worship before we win.

The Battle Was Big Because the Blessing Was Big

When Jehoshaphat and his people finally arrived at the battlefield, God had already defeated their enemies.

And what they discovered was incredible.

There was so much equipment, clothing, and treasure left behind that it took them three days to collect it all.

The battle had been bigger than them.

But so was the blessing.

On the fourth day, they gathered together and worshiped God. They named that place the Valley of Beracah — the Valley of Blessing.

The same valley that could have become the place of their destruction became the place they remembered for God’s blessing.

Maybe you’re standing in front of something right now that feels bigger than you.

Good.

You were never supposed to carry everything alone.

Respond in faith before you react in fear.

Look up before you look around.

Worship before you win.

You may not know what to do. You may not have the strength to fix it. You may not be able to see how the story ends.

But you can keep your eyes on the One who is bigger than the battle.

Because sometimes the battle is bigger than you because the blessing on the other side is more than you could carry alone.
