Stacking Stones: Prayer Is Our First Strategy

Most of us believe in prayer. The problem isn’t that we don’t believe God can move—it’s that too often, we wait until we’ve tried everything else before we ask Him to.

We fight the battle ourselves. We make the decision ourselves. We carry the pressure ourselves. Then, when nothing else works, we pray.

But prayer was never meant to be our last resort.

Prayer should be our first strategy, not our last resort.

Don’t Wait Until the Battle Is Lost

In 1 Samuel 4, Israel went into battle against the Philistines without the Ark of the Covenant. After suffering a devastating loss, they finally brought the Ark into the fight.

But by then, they were treating God’s presence like an emergency play instead of their source of victory.

We often make the same mistake. We try to handle the battle in our own strength, and when things get desperate, we finally “run the God play.”

Prayer isn’t what you grab after the loss. It’s what you carry into the fight.

What would change if we prayed before the crisis? Before the decision? Before the temptation? Before the enemy ever had an opportunity to gain ground?

Our Power Comes From Our Position, Not Our Performance

Paul writes in Ephesians 6:10:

“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”

Our spiritual strength doesn’t come from how perfectly we live, how long we pray, or how faithfully we keep up with our Bible reading.

Our power comes from our position in Christ.

Jesus has already defeated the powers of darkness through the cross. We aren’t fighting to earn victory—we’re standing on ground Jesus has already won.

That changes how we pray.

Prayer isn’t powerful because we are good enough. Prayer is powerful because Jesus is King.

The Enemy Attacks the Gaps We Don’t Guard

Ephesians 6 tells us to put on the full armor of God.

Paul’s language is intentional. A soldier could be covered almost everywhere, but one unprotected area could still become the enemy’s target.

The same is true spiritually.

The enemy looks for the places we’ve left unguarded—our thoughts, relationships, beliefs, emotions, habits, faith, and integrity.

The greatest danger isn’t simply the enemy’s strength. It’s the gaps we leave open.

That’s why Paul tells us to put on the whole armor of God: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God.

The armor prepares us for battle.

Prayer is how we fight.

Prayer Sets the Perimeter

After describing the armor of God, Paul says:

“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” — Ephesians 6:18

Pray about everything. Pray continually. Cover your family. Cover your calling. Cover your mind. Cover your future.

Prayer sets a perimeter around your life.

Nehemiah gives us a powerful picture of this. Jerusalem’s walls had been destroyed, leaving the people exposed to attack. When rebuilding began, families repaired the sections of wall near their own homes.

Stone by stone, they closed the gaps.

They were declaring, “The enemy isn’t coming through here anymore.”

Prayer works the same way.

Every prayer is another stone.

We may not see an immediate answer every time we pray, but prayers accumulate. Day after day, we build spiritual walls around the territory God has entrusted to us.

The gaps you fill today become the ground you hold tomorrow.

Start Stacking Stones

Maybe your prayer life has grown weak. Maybe distraction, disappointment, or exhaustion has allowed some walls to come down.

You don’t have to rebuild everything today.

Start with one stone.

Pray over your children.

Stack a stone.

Pray over your marriage.

Stack a stone.

Pray over your mind, your calling, your future, and the places where you’ve been losing ground.

Stack another stone.

In 1 Kings 18, Elijah repaired the broken altar stone by stone. Then he prayed—and the fire of God fell.

If you’ve been losing ground, it’s time to rebuild the altar.

Start stacking stones.

Prayer isn’t a desperation move when everything else fails. It is a daily decision to guard what God has given you and stand on the victory Jesus has already won.

What you pray about today is shaping the victory you will live in tomorrow.

So draw the battle lines.

Guard the gaps.

And don’t give up another inch of ground.
