Why surface-level fixes will never heal a soul-level problem

A few years ago, we noticed a small spot on the floor near our front door. It was barely noticeable—smaller than a dime. We assumed one of the kids had spilled something.

But when we went to clean it up, the floor crumbled.

What looked solid on the surface was hollow underneath.

As we looked closer, we found more spots—areas that appeared normal but were slightly sunken. Termites had been tunneling beneath the surface for who knows how long. We had walked past it a hundred times and never noticed.

The damage wasn’t visible… until it was.

That moment revealed something deeper than a home repair issue—it exposed a pattern most of us are living in.

We tend to focus on what we can see… while ignoring what’s happening underneath.

A Surface-First World

We live in a culture obsessed with appearances.

We filter our flaws, edit our struggles, and present polished versions of our lives. We’ve gotten very good at celebrating public victories while quietly carrying private battles.

On the outside, life can look full.
On the inside, it can feel empty.

Jesus addressed this tension directly:

“What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet lose his soul?” — Matthew 16:26

It’s possible to win on the surface… and still lose where it matters most.

1. The Condition of Your Soul Determines the Quality of Your Life

Your soul is not your appearance, your performance, or your circumstances.

Scripture uses words like nephesh (whole life) and psuchē (mind, will, emotions) to describe it. Your soul is your inner world—what you believe, what you feel, what you desire.

It’s the part of you no one sees… but everything flows from.

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” — Proverbs 4:23

Every behavior, every habit, every emotional pattern has a root system beneath it.

Anger. Anxiety. Emptiness. Compulsion.

These aren’t the core problem. They’re symptoms.

But most of us don’t treat them that way. We try to manage the surface instead of examining the source.

2. You Can’t Solve Soul Needs with Surface Solutions

In Gospel of Mark 9:15–27, a father brings his son to Jesus. The boy is tormented by an evil spirit, and the disciples had already tried to help—but nothing worked.

The father says something revealing:

“If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Jesus doesn’t immediately address the spirit.nHe addresses the word “if.”

Because the real issue wasn’t just what was happening to the boy—it was what had formed inside the father over years of disappointment.

Unbelief.

They were trying to fix what they could see… while ignoring what was shaping everything beneath the surface.

We do the same thing.

We get the promotion—but still feel insecure.
We find the relationship—but still feel unloved.
We stay busy—but still feel empty.

We keep treating symptoms instead of addressing the source.

It’s like masking pain without diagnosing the cause. It may bring temporary relief, but it prevents real healing—and often makes things worse over time.

3. Healing Happens at the Source

Jesus responds:

“Everything is possible for one who believes.”

And the father replies with one of the most honest statements in Scripture:

“I believe. Help my unbelief.”

He didn’t pretend.
He didn’t clean it up.
He brought his real condition.

Two things were true at the same time:

He had faith
He was struggling to trust

And Jesus met him right there.

Only after addressing the condition of the father’s soul does Jesus heal the son.

The order matters: Soul first. Surface second.

That’s how God works. Not from the outside in—but from the inside out.

What This Means for You

Most people come to God asking Him to fix what they can see.

The habit.
The situation.
The pressure.

But Jesus is after something deeper. He doesn’t just want to solve your problems—He wants to heal your soul.

To reshape how you think.
To reorder what you desire.
To restore what’s been damaged underneath the surface.

As Psalms 23 says:

“He restores my soul.”

That’s the goal.

Because when your soul is healthy, your life becomes whole.

Final Thought

You can spend your life gaining everything the world offers… and still feel like something is missing.

Or you can allow God to go deeper—beneath the surface—into the places that actually determine the direction of your life.

The question isn’t just: What needs to change around you?

It’s this: What’s happening within you?

Because it’s deeper than you think.

God Has Left The Building

There’s a natural tendency in all of us to hold onto what God used to do. We build our faith around past experiences, familiar systems, and proven methods. But in Acts 7, Stephen confronts that mindset head-on with a disruptive truth: God has never been confined to buildings, and He refuses to be limited to our systems.

In this message, Pastor Rory unpacks how Israel slowly shifted from a God-centered faith to a location-centered religion. What began as a movable tabernacle—God dwelling in the middle of His people—eventually became a fixed temple that people began to rely on more than the presence it represented. The structure wasn’t the problem; the attachment to it was .

They chose the picture over the reality.

Stephen’s bold statement echoes through history: God does not live in houses made by human hands.

This wasn’t just theology—it was a direct challenge to an entire religious system.

Jesus reinforces this shift in John 4 when He tells the Samaritan woman that true worship is no longer about where you go, but about worshiping in Spirit and truth. He didn’t come to relocate worship—He came to redefine it. Through the Holy Spirit, God now dwells within His people, not in a place they visit.

That changes everything.

Worship is no longer confined to a moment, a service, or a building. It becomes a lifestyle—expressed in conversations, obedience, generosity, and everyday faithfulness. The same Spirit that filled the early church didn’t stay in the temple—it spilled into streets, homes, prisons, and ordinary lives.

That’s the pattern: When the Spirit fills a life, it doesn’t stay contained— it overflows.

Stephen himself becomes the example. He wasn’t a platform preacher—he was serving tables. Yet because he was full of the Spirit, his life overflowed with power, boldness, and grace—even in the face of death.

This message presses a hard but necessary question: Are we building our faith around what God did, or are we living in step with what He is doing now?

Because it’s possible to honor the past while completely missing the present.

Religion tends to create formulas:
Experience → Repeat → Protect → Defend

But the Spirit invites something different:
Follow → Listen → Move → Overflow

The early church didn’t change the world from inside a building. They changed it because they carried the presence of God everywhere they went.

And that same invitation stands today.

What if God wants to move in your Monday the same way He moves on your Sunday?
What if your workplace, your home, your routines—are actually your assignment?
What if the people around you aren’t interruptions, but opportunities for the Spirit to overflow?

The goal was never to go to church.
The call has always been to be the church.

Because what changes the world isn’t religion behind walls—it’s Spirit-filled people who refuse to stay behind them.

There’s a reason breaking bad habits is so difficult.

Researchers estimate that 40–45% of what we do every day isn’t intentional—it’s habitual . Nearly half of life is lived on autopilot. You’ve felt it before—driving somewhere and not remembering the last 20 minutes, reaching for your phone without thinking, repeating patterns you didn’t consciously choose.

That’s how your brain is designed. Repetition creates efficiency.

But here’s the problem: What happens when your faith becomes one of those patterns?

When Faith Runs on Autopilot

If we’re honest, this is a question most people would rather avoid: How much of your faith is actually intentional… and how much is just repetition?

It’s possible to go through all the motions—church attendance, prayer, reading Scripture—and still be operating on autopilot. Still unchanged. Still untransformed.

Because:

Religion can become repetition without transformation.

Religion modifies behavior.
Relationship transforms the heart.

That tension is exactly what Stephen confronts in Acts 7. He’s speaking to deeply religious people—people formed by tradition—but who had a long history of missing what God was doing right in front of them.

Not once. Not twice.
Generation after generation.

1. We Repeat What We Don’t Rethink

Stephen points to a pattern in Israel’s history: They kept rejecting God’s messengers—even Moses.

“They refused to obey him… and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.”

The issue wasn’t lack of information.
It was refusal to rethink .

We do the same thing.

We assume:

“This time will be different.”
“I’ll try harder.”
“I’ll manage it better.”

But we’re using the same thinking that produced the same results .

That’s why the New Testament message isn’t just “feel bad” or “try harder.”

It’s repent —change your thinking.

If you don’t rethink it, you’ll repeat it.

2. We Institutionalize What We Don’t Internalize

Here’s the irony Stephen exposes:

Israel once rejected Moses… but later built their entire system around him.

They honored what they never actually obeyed .

That’s what religion does when it stays external.

You attend church… but never become the Church
You follow practices… but never experience transformation
You know Scripture… but don’t encounter the God behind it

This is where legalism is born—when systems replace the heart.

Jesus warned about this:

You can tithe and still ignore people in need
You can know the Bible and still be spiritually empty
You can look right on the outside and be dead on the inside

You can do all the right things… and still resist the Holy Spirit.

That’s the danger.

When faith becomes transactional—“If I do this, God does that”—you’ve reduced relationship to a system.

And systems can’t transform you.

3. Your Life Reveals What You Actually Believe

Eventually, what’s internal shows up externally.

You can only perform for so long before your life exposes your beliefs.

Stephen walks through Israel’s story:

They had the law.
They had the system.
They had the structure.

But they still turned to idols.

Why?

Because:

You always end up at the feet of what you believe in most deeply.

Not what you say.
Not what you post.
Not what you perform.

What you truly believe shapes where your life goes.

The Real Invitation

So what’s the solution?

Not abandoning faith.
Not trying harder.
Not doubling down on discipline.

Jesus offers something different:

“Come to me… and I will give you rest.”

That invitation isn’t for people who don’t believe.

It’s for people who are exhausted from trying .

People who have been:

Carrying the weight of performance
Living in religious repetition
Stuck in patterns they can’t break

Jesus says: “Take my yoke.”

A yoke connects two things together.

He’s saying:

Connect your weakness to my strength
Connect your effort to my grace
Connect your life to mine

This is the exchange:

You bring your performance → He gives you grace
You bring your exhaustion → He gives you rest
You bring your repetition → He gives you transformation

Final Thought

If your faith has become routine…
If you’ve been going through the motions…
If you feel stuck in patterns you can’t break…

The answer isn’t more religion.

It’s relationship.

Religion works from the outside in.
Jesus transforms from the inside out.

So stop running the same loop.

Stop living on autopilot.

And respond to the simplest—and most powerful—invitation in Scripture: Come to Jesus.

The Outside Lane

Have you ever felt like an outsider?

Not just socially—but spiritually. Like everyone else seems to “get it,” and you’re just trying to keep up. Like there’s a system, a rhythm, a language… and you somehow missed the memo.

That feeling isn’t new.

In Acts of the Apostles chapter 7, a man named Stephen stands up and delivers one of the most powerful sermons in the early church. His message? Because Jesus has risen, the era of religion is over—and a new era of relationship has begun.

And to prove it, he points to a surprising story: Joseph.

You Can Be Outside the System and Inside the Story

Joseph’s life didn’t look like favor. He was betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison. If anyone looked like they were outside of God’s plan, it was him.

Yet Stephen makes a simple but profound statement:

“But God was with him.”

Joseph may have been outside the system—outside the land, the family structure, the blessing—but he was never outside God’s presence.

That’s the tension many people live in today.

You can feel:

Outside the circle
Outside the expectations
Outside the “right kind” of faith

But still be fully inside the story God is writing.

Lesson 1: Comparison Steals

Joseph’s story starts with comparison.

His brothers looked at his life—his coat, his dreams, his favor—and instead of trusting God with their own journey, they resented his.

Comparison distorted their perspective and led them into sin. The same thing happens now.

We compare:

Our behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel
Our struggles to someone else’s success
Our lane to someone else’s progress

But life isn’t a straight line—it’s a staggered start. You weren’t meant to run your race while watching someone else’s.

Scripture puts it plainly:

Pay careful attention to your own work… you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.

When you compare, you lose clarity. When you stay in your lane, you gain focus.

Lesson 2: Pressure Reveals

Joseph didn’t just face disappointment—he faced pressure.

Pressure in slavery.
Pressure in temptation.
Pressure in prison.

And every time, something was revealed: his character.

Pressure doesn’t create what’s inside you—it exposes it.

That’s uncomfortable, but it’s also necessary.

Because God doesn’t just want to give you a purpose—He wants to prepare you for it.

Joseph’s integrity in hidden places became the foundation for influence in public places.

What if the pressure you’re feeling isn’t there to break you—but to build you?

Lesson 3: Purpose Prevails

Joseph’s life looked like it was going backward for 13 years.

Pit.
Slavery.
False accusation.
Prison.

But none of it canceled his purpose.

Not one moment.

Eventually, he stands in a palace, second in command, positioned to save not just a nation—but the very family that betrayed him.

And he says this:

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good.”

That’s the truth Stephen wanted his audience to see.

God’s purpose doesn’t depend on:

The right environment
The right people
The right timing

It depends on one thing: God being with you.

Winning From the Outside Lane

In track, the outside lane is the one nobody wants.

You can’t see your competitors.
You don’t know how you’re doing.
You feel behind—even when you’re not.

But in 2016, an Olympic runner named Wayde van Niekerk won gold from the outside lane—running blind the entire race.

That’s what faith often feels like.

You don’t see the full picture.
You don’t know where you stand.
You just keep running.

And that’s enough.

Because if God is with you, you don’t need perfect conditions to win.

Final Thought

Religion says:

Get it right
Be in the right place
Perform the right way

But Jesus says:

My strength is made perfect in your weakness.

You may feel like you’re:

Outside the system
Outside the blessing
Outside the plan

But if God is with you… You are not outside the story.

A Simple Decision

So here’s the shift:

Stop comparing
Stay faithful under pressure
Keep running with purpose

Even when you can’t see it.

Because you can win from the outside lane.

Jesus Over Religion

Have you ever tried something that was supposed to make life easier… but ended up making everything harder?

Self-checkout at the grocery store is a perfect example. You go in thinking, “I’ll be in and out.” But then it starts—
“Unexpected item in bagging area.”
Scan. Error. Wait. Reset. Repeat.

Meanwhile, the people in the regular line are already walking out with their groceries.

What was designed to simplify the process actually made it more complicated.

If we’re honest, that’s how religion can feel.

You wanted God.
But what you got was a system—rules, rituals, expectations, hoops to jump through.

And somewhere along the way, relationship got replaced with performance.

When Religion Replaces Relationship

From the beginning, God never intended for people to relate to Him through empty rituals.

In fact, in the Old Testament, God said He was tired of sacrifices and ceremonies that had no heart behind them.

Religion had become a system where:

Behavior mattered more than the heart
Rules mattered more than relationship
Access to God felt limited and controlled

And that’s exactly what Jesus came to confront.

The resurrection of Jesus wasn’t just a miracle to celebrate — it marked the end of an era.

Not the end of God.
The end of religion as a system of earning your way to Him.

1. Religion Closes Doors

In Acts of the Apostles 6–7, we meet Stephen—a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, doing miracles and pointing people to Jesus.

And what happens? Religious leaders feel threatened.

Not because Stephen was wrong…
but because he was bypassing their system.

He was showing people they could go straight to Jesus.

So they lied about him.
Attacked his reputation.
And eventually killed him.

That’s what religion does when it feels threatened—it protects the system, even at the cost of people.

Jesus said it clearly in Gospel of Matthew 23:13:
Religious leaders were shutting the door of the kingdom in people’s faces.

And it still happens today—just in quieter ways:

Judgment instead of grace
Shame instead of restoration
Exclusion instead of invitation

Religion says: “Clean yourself up, then come.”
Jesus says: “Come, and I’ll change your life.”

2. Grace Crosses Lines

Stephen takes it all the way back to Abraham.

Before there was a temple.
Before there were rituals.
Before there was a system.

God showed up… in Mesopotamia.

Not in a holy place.
Not in a sacred building.
Not after Abraham got everything right.

God came to him.

That was radical then—and it still is now.

Most religions are built around sacred spaces:

Temples
Shrines
Holy locations

But the gospel flipped that idea completely.

Because of Jesus, there is no place you have to go to find God.

He comes to you.

He meets people:

In broken places
In messy situations
In moments of doubt and searching

The empty tomb is the only “sacred site” in Christianity—and it’s empty for a reason.

Jesus isn’t located somewhere.
He’s alive and moving toward people.

Grace crosses every line religion tries to draw.

3. God Calls You Out

God didn’t just meet Abraham where he was.

He called him out of it.

“Leave your country… and go to the land I will show you.”

No map.
No timeline.
No guarantees.

Just a direction—and a promise.

That’s the difference between belief and faith.

Religion keeps you stuck:

Stuck in old patterns
Stuck in safe systems
Stuck in what feels predictable

But God calls you forward.

Faith always involves movement.

At some point, you have to leave what’s comfortable to step into what God is calling you to.

And if you never take that step, you may believe in God… but never actually follow Him.

It Is Finished

When Jesus hung on the cross, His final words were simple:

“It is finished.”

Not “almost done.”
Not “you finish the rest.”

Finished.

In that moment:

The system was broken
The barrier was removed
The distance was gone

The temple curtain tore from top to bottom—symbolizing that access to God was no longer restricted.

No more hoops.
No more earning.
No more trying to be “good enough.”

Religion says: “Work your way to God.”
Jesus says: “I’ve already made a way.”

Now What?

This isn’t just theology. It’s an invitation.

Because if Jesus really rose from the dead—then He’s not just worth believing in.

He’s worth following.

So the real question is:

Where are you?

Already in a real relationship with Jesus?
Ready to begin or begin again?
Still exploring and asking questions?
Not interested—but open to being prayed for?

Wherever you are, this much is clear:

Jesus didn’t come to start a religion.

He came to bring you into relationship.

And that door is already open.

Closer Than You Think

"Closer Than You Think"

Have you ever wondered where God is?

Not as a theological question—but a real one. The kind that shows up when life gets quiet… or heavy… or confusing.

Maybe you’ve prayed and felt nothing.
Maybe you’ve worshiped and felt dry.
Maybe you’ve walked through something hard and thought, “If God is here… why does He feel so far away?”

You’re not the first to ask that.

All throughout Scripture, people wrestled with the same question:

“Why, Lord, do you stand far off?” (Psalm 10)
“How long will you hide your face from me?” (Psalm 13)
“My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Psalm 22)

This isn’t a modern struggle. It’s a human one.

And it often leads us to believe something that isn’t true:
That God is somewhere else.

The Problem: We Believe in a Distant God

In Exodus 33, we see how Israel viewed God:

The “tent of meeting” was set up outside the camp.

If you wanted to meet with God, you had to leave where you were and go somewhere else.

That became their mindset:

God is out there.
God is distant.
God shows up in certain places—but not here.

And if we’re honest, many of us still think this way.

We believe God is real.
We believe God is powerful.
We just struggle to believe He’s present.

So we live like He’s an “intercom God”—

A God you have to page.
A God you have to reach.
A God who responds only after enough effort, enough faith, enough performance.

But here’s the truth:

God isn’t absent from your life—He’s just easy to overlook.

1. God Is Always Present

It’s easy to think God disappears when life gets difficult. But Scripture says the opposite.

God doesn’t step out when things get messy.
He doesn’t withdraw when you struggle.
He doesn’t abandon you when you fail.

Even in the wilderness, Israel complained, doubted, and disobeyed—and still:

The pillar of cloud by day and fire by night never left them.

God was there the whole time.

The problem wasn’t His presence.
It was their awareness.

We see this clearly in Jacob’s story in Genesis 28. He lays down in what feels like a random, broken place—and then wakes up saying:

“Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”

That’s the tension.

Sometimes it’s not that God isn’t present—
It’s that we aren’t paying attention.

2. God Is Always Pursuing

God is not passive.

He is not sitting back waiting for you to figure it out.

From beginning to end, the story of Scripture is about a God who comes down.

He came down in the cloud.
He came down on Mount Sinai.
He came down in Jesus.
He came down at Pentecost.

Over and over again—God moves toward people.

Not because they earned it.
Not because they got everything right.
But because that’s who He is.

While Israel stood at a distance, God still descended to meet Moses.

While Adam and Eve hid, God came looking.

While humanity was broken, God came near through the cross.

We don’t climb our way to God—He comes down to us.

3. God Is Always Accessible

God doesn’t make Himself hard to find.

Jeremiah 29 says:

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Jesus made this even clearer.

When He entered the temple and flipped tables, it wasn’t random anger—it was purposeful.

The system that was supposed to help people access God had become a barrier.

And Jesus removed it.

At the cross, the veil tore.

No more separation.
No more distance.
No more middleman.

Now:

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him.” (Psalm 145:18)
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

God is not hiding.
He is accessible.

Final Thought: You’re Not Far—You’re Just Unaware

Maybe you’ve been feeling distant from God.

Maybe you’ve been searching and coming up empty.
Maybe you feel dry, disconnected, or overlooked.

Here’s the truth you need to anchor in:

God is not outside the camp.
He’s not waiting for you to reach Him.
He’s not ignoring you.

He’s closer than you think.

Always present — even when you can’t feel Him
Always pursuing — even when you feel stuck
Always accessible — even when you don’t know what to say

You don’t need a system.
You don’t need perfect words.
You don’t need to clean yourself up first.

Just call His name.

He’s already near.

Is God Really Jealous? (And Why That’s Good News)

In this series, we’ve been untangling the misconceptions we carry about God—ideas shaped by culture, experiences, and sometimes simple misunderstandings.

One of the biggest tensions people feel when reading Scripture is this:

“God is jealous.”

That raises a real question:

Is God actually jealous? And if He is… why?

The Misunderstanding of God’s Jealousy

When we hear the word jealous, we tend to think of insecurity, control, or pettiness.

But that’s not what Scripture is describing.

In Exodus 20:3-5 we see one of the first commandments God gives:

“You shall have no other gods before me… for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.”

At first glance, that can feel intense. But the deeper you go, the clearer it becomes:

God’s jealousy isn’t insecurity—it’s covenant love.

Idols vs. Gods: What’s the Difference?

The text actually separates two things:

Idols (the “what”) – the visible object
Gods (the “who”) – what you believe will give you what you want

That matters because: You don’t need a statue to have a god.

Anything you depend on for:

identity
security
happiness
fulfillment

…can function as a “little g” god.

And here’s the truth most people miss: What you worship, you will serve. Period.

We Still Worship “Other Gods” (Just More Subtly)

Ancient cultures worshipped gods like:

Baal (fertility, provision)
Ashtoreth (love, power)

Today, we don’t bow to statues—but we still chase the same outcomes:

Success → “If I just make more…”
Relationships → “If I just find the right person…”
Comfort → “If life gets easier…”
Control → “If I stay in charge…”

We’ve just modernized idolatry.

We don’t build altars—but we build lives around these things.

Why It’s So Easy to Drift

Here’s the deeper issue: False gods are transactional. God is relational.

Ancient worship worked like this

“I give so that you give.”

And if we’re honest, we still do this with God:

“God, if you come through, I’ll trust you.”
“If you fix this, I’ll follow you.”

That’s not covenant—that’s negotiation.

And when we treat God like that, we shrink Him into just another “option” instead of recognizing Him as the only source.

The Golden Calf Problem (Still Happens Today)

When Israel made the golden calf, they didn’t reject God outright.

They said:

“This is the god who brought us out of Egypt.”

They wanted:

a version of God they could control
a version of God they could understand
a version of God on their terms

Sound familiar?

We do the same thing when we:

reduce God to what He’s done for us
define Him by our experiences
reshape Him to fit our preferences

We don’t abandon God—we remake Him.

What God’s “Jealousy” Actually Means

The Hebrew word often translated “jealous” is closer to: Zealous. Passionate. Protective.

God’s saying:

“You are mine, and I am fully committed to you.”

This is not the jealousy of insecurity.

This is the jealousy of a husband who deeply loves his bride.

Three Marks of Seeing God Clearly

1. Countercultural Faith

Rahab trusted God over everything she had known—and it changed her story.

Real faith often looks different from the world around you.

2. Humble Confidence

The centurion didn’t approach Jesus demanding results.

He came with two things:

Confidence in God’s ability
Awareness of his own unworthiness

That’s the difference between treating God like a tool… and trusting Him as Lord.

3. From Master to Husband

God doesn’t just want obedience.

He wants relationship.

Hosea paints this picture:

“You will call me ‘my husband,’ not ‘my master.’”

That’s intimacy, not obligation.

Why People Resist This

Because if God is truly the only God…

Then everything else has to move out of the way.

That means:

surrendering control
releasing comfort
letting go of substitutes

And if we’re honest:

We don’t mind adding God to our lives…
We just don’t want Him to take over.

The Reality We Can’t Ignore

Here’s the tension: God will not compete with your idols.

And sometimes, the most sobering truth is this: It is a fearful thing when God lets you have your way.

Because anything you put in His place will eventually fail you.

The Invitation

God’s jealousy is not about restriction.

It’s about protection.

He’s not trying to take from you—He’s trying to keep you from settling for less.

Because in Him:

your future is secure
your identity is rooted
your joy is complete
your worth is established

He’s not one option among many.
He is everything.

Have you ever tried to make a deal with God?

Most of us have—even if we didn’t say it out loud.

Not the obvious, joking kind (“God, I’ll give you 90% if I win the lottery”). Those aren’t dangerous because we don’t actually believe them.

The real issue is the quiet deal we live by:

God, I’ll follow you… if you come through for me.
I’ll trust you… if the story turns out the way I want.

That mindset turns God into what you might call a “Gameshow God.”
We show up, do the right things, earn our points—and expect God to deliver the prize.

A good life.
Open doors.
Protection from pain.

But that version of God only works when you’re “winning.”

Because the moment life doesn’t go your way—when prayers go unanswered, when doors stay closed, when things fall apart—that belief collapses. And suddenly you’re not just questioning your situation… you’re questioning God.

Here’s the truth we don’t like to admit:

God doesn’t exist to serve us. We exist to serve Him.

We’re not the main character. He is.

And once that shifts, everything else starts to make sense.

1. God’s ways are higher

God doesn’t always lead you the shortest or easiest route—but He always leads the right one.

The Israelites took a longer path through the wilderness, not because God was careless—but because He was protective. What looked like delay was actually direction.

We choose comfort. God chooses formation.
We want quick results. God is building lasting character.

Just because you don’t understand His way doesn’t mean His way isn’t better.

2. God’s promises are bigger than your problems

When Israel reached the edge of the Promised Land, they saw giants—and forgot the promise.

They expected “God’s will” to mean “no resistance.”
But following God doesn’t remove battles—it redefines them.

Two things can be true at once:

Life can be hard.
God can still be good.

The difference is perspective.
If you elevate problems, fear grows.
If you elevate God’s promises, faith grows.

3. God’s character never changes

Even when Israel doubted, complained, and pulled back—God remained who He said He was.

Not because they earned it.
Because that’s who He is.

Slow to anger.
Full of unfailing love.
Faithful, even when we are not.

God’s goodness isn’t based on your circumstances—it’s anchored in His character.

Final Thought

You may not understand the road you’re on.
The problems may feel bigger than the promises.

But God hasn’t changed.

The same God who saved, led, and provided before—is still that God now.

So don’t reduce Him to a gameshow host handing out prizes.

Trust Him as the Author of the story—even when you don’t like the chapter you’re in.

Where Did Your Picture of God Come From?

Not your technical beliefs — but your gut instinct about Him.

For many of us, that picture formed quietly over time through church experiences, culture, conversations, and painful moments.

Even growing up in church doesn’t guarantee accuracy. As a kid, I sang “We Exalt Thee” but thought the words were “We Exhaust Thee.” I genuinely believed God must be worn out from dealing with us.

It sounds funny — but many people carry misunderstandings about God for years without realizing it.

Some didn’t grow up in church at all. Their impressions came from movies, conversations, or negative experiences with religious people.

As adults, many discover their childhood version of God can’t stand up to real-life questions. Some walk away from faith. Others stay physically but check out mentally.

Often, people aren’t rejecting God.

They’re rejecting a distorted version they were handed.

You can reject the right God for the wrong reasons.

God Reveals Who He Really Is

The Bible is a story of God revealing Himself.

In Exodus 34, God personally describes His character after Israel’s major failure with the golden calf.

“Yahweh! The LORD!
The God of compassion and mercy!
Slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.”
— Exodus 34:6

God is personal, not abstract.
He is consistent, not unpredictable.
And His character does not change based on our behavior.

This passage becomes the most quoted description of God in Scripture because it corrects our misconceptions.

Two truths we often get wrong:

God’s justice
God’s mercy

We tend to choose one. God perfectly holds both.

1. God Does Not Ignore Sin

Some imagine God as endlessly permissive — all grace, no correction.

But real love protects.

Sin destroys lives. What feels good in the moment can lead to long-term damage. God forgives sin, but He never pretends it’s harmless.

A God who ignores injustice wouldn’t be loving.

God is loving and holy.

He does not shrug at sin.

He is a loving Father, not a careless guardian.

2. God Doesn’t Snap at Sinners

Others picture God as constantly disappointed — quick to judge and impossible to please.

But God describes Himself as:

“Compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love…”

“Slow to anger” literally means long-fused.

God’s anger is measured and patient. He delays judgment to give people time to repent and return.

He is not waiting for you to fail.

You must walk over a mountain of grace before reaching His judgment.

God doesn’t shrug at sin.
But He doesn’t snap at sinners.

3. God Shows Unfailing Love

God’s love is described with the Hebrew word ḥesed — loyal, covenant love.

Not based on performance.
Not easily withdrawn.
Love that keeps showing up.

Even in ruin, Scripture says:

“His mercies are new every morning.”
— Lamentations 3:23

You cannot exhaust God’s mercy.

Not because you’re perfect — but because He is faithful.

The Cross Shows the Full Picture

At the cross, mercy and justice meet.

God doesn’t ignore sin.
He pays for it through Jesus.

Love satisfies justice.

That’s the real picture of God.

Come Closer

If you believe God is distant or angry, you’ll stay at the bottom of the mountain.

But when Moses encountered who God really is, he fell in worship.

That’s what happens when you meet the real God.

He isn’t a God looking for reasons to push you away.

He is a Second Chance Savior inviting you closer.

Most of us know what it’s like to receive hand-me-downs.

Sometimes they’re useful. Sometimes they don’t fit. Either way, you didn’t choose them — but they become yours.

Beliefs can work the same way.

Many of us inherited our view of God. Maybe it came from a church culture that felt exclusive. Maybe from a parent who claimed faith but didn’t live it. Maybe from unanswered prayers, hypocrisy, or religion that felt like rules without relationship.

When faith is secondhand, it’s fragile. We live on borrowed convictions and then wonder why we struggle to hold onto them.

A.W. Tozer said what we believe about God is the most important thing about us. If we believe God is distant, we drift. If we believe He’s angry, we live in fear. If we believe He’s disappointed, we live in shame. If we believe He exists only to affirm us, we never change.

What if the God you struggle to serve isn’t God at all — but a version someone handed you?

Distance Distorts

In Exodus, Israel witnessed undeniable miracles: plagues, the Red Sea, manna in the wilderness. Yet they still didn’t truly know God.

Why? Because they kept their distance.

When God invited them to the mountain (Exodus 20), they stepped back in fear and told Moses to speak on their behalf. Moses had proximity. They did not.

And distance distorted everything.

When they faced hardship, they assumed God was against them. Deliverance felt like danger. Salvation felt like struggle.

Many of our spiritual struggles aren’t about God’s power — they’re about our perception of His character. It’s hard to trust a God you don’t know personally.

Manufactured Gods

When Moses stayed on the mountain forty days, the people built a golden calf (Exodus 32). It was familiar, manageable, and convenient.

The gods we manufacture always are.

They share our opinions. They never confront our sin. They don’t demand growth or obedience.

Aaron even called the idol a “festival to the LORD.” They put God’s name on something He never authorized.

At the bottom of the mountain, they built a substitute.
At the top, God was designing a meeting place.

One was secondhand religion. The other was personal encounter.

God Speaks

In Exodus 34, God speaks for Himself:

“The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”

Not a system. Not a ritual. A name. A character.

God refused to let others define Him. His desire has always been firsthand relationship — not inherited religion.

You can know church and not know God.
You can know doctrine and never meet the Father.

From Sinai to the Cross, God’s project has been the same: remove the barriers and invite us closer.

So how do you move from Second Hand Savior to firsthand faith?

Make the climb.

Climb over disappointment.
Climb over hurt.
Climb over the version of God someone handed you.

Distance distorts.
Hearts manufacture substitutes.
But God still speaks — and He still invites you to come closer.

The Peacemakers

We closed our Bless This Mess series with a simple truth: relationships don’t drift toward peace. They drift toward tension. Peace must be made.

From the beginning, God promised Abraham:

“You will be a blessing… and all families on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:2–3)

Abraham’s family was full of dysfunction—jealousy, impatience, blurred boundaries. Yet God’s blessing was bigger than their mess. And He chose to work through people to bring it.

That hasn’t changed.

In every relationship, there are mess makers and mess cleaners. The question is not whether there’s tension. The question is: Will you bring the blessing?

Peacekeepers vs. Peacemakers

Jesus said:

“Blessed are the peacemakers…” (Matthew 5:9)

Peacekeepers avoid conflict to keep things calm.
Peacemakers address conflict to build wholeness.

Peacekeepers:

Avoid hard conversations
Struggle with boundaries
Suppress emotions
Harbor resentment

Peacemakers:

Speak up when it’s uncomfortable
Maintain healthy boundaries
Give grace
Process conflict with purpose

Peace is not the absence of trouble. It’s the presence of intentional leadership.

What Peacemakers Do...

1. They Keep Healthy Boundaries

In Genesis 13, Abraham drew clear lines with Lot to stop escalating conflict. In Genesis 16, blurred boundaries with Hagar created division.

Where boundaries aren’t defined, peace won’t survive.

Sometimes the thing disrupting peace isn’t a person—it’s misplaced priorities, outside voices, or unresolved expectations.

Peacemakers draw the lines God draws—and they hold them.

2. They Say What Is Hard

Avoiding conflict doesn’t protect relationships. It slowly weakens them.

Abraham’s passivity prolonged family tension for years. What goes unaddressed grows.

Ephesians 4:15 gives the framework: Speak the truth in love.

Truth without love wounds.
Love without truth enables.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is initiate a hard conversation.

3. They Speak What Is True

In Genesis 22, when Isaac asked where the sacrifice was, Abraham answered: “God will provide.”

He refused to let fear define the moment.

Many homes are missing a voice of faith. It’s easy to speak frustration. It’s harder to speak promise.

Hebrews 3:13 tells us to encourage one another daily—to come alongside and call forward.

One word of faith can shift the atmosphere of a family.

Where Do You Start?

If your relationships feel strained, start here:

Set a boundary.
Have the conversation.
Forgive.
Speak life.

“Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” (Colossians 3:13)

Peace doesn’t come from keeping things quiet.
It comes from doing the hard thing that heals.

God still blesses messy families.
But often, He does it through peacemakers.

"The Freedom of Forgiveness"

There’s a reason forgiveness feels so difficult: it’s not just emotional—it’s spiritual. Forgiveness is one of the primary ways God protects your heart, your peace, and your future.

Because when you don’t forgive, the pain doesn’t just “stay in the past.” It starts building something in the present.

1) Unforgiveness Traps the Soul

Jesus said it plainly: offenses will come (Luke 17:1). In a world full of imperfect people, hurt is inevitable.

But what happens after the offense is the crossroads:

Do I hold onto it?
Do I replay it?
Do I collect payment for it?
Or do I release it?

Proverbs gives a mature target: it’s wisdom to be slow to anger—and it’s glory to overlook an offense (Proverbs 19:11). Not because the offense was “nothing,” but because wisdom refuses to let it become everything.

Don’t give the devil a foothold

Paul warns us:

“Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry… and do not give the devil a foothold.” (Ephesians 4:26–27)

A foothold is access. It’s a small opening the enemy uses to influence your attitude, your reactions, your relationships, and your peace.

And one of the clearest ways footholds form is through unresolved anger and unforgiveness.

Important distinction from the notes:

A foothold is not a stronghold .
But footholds can become strongholds if they’re allowed to stay.

The goal is to close the door early.

Bitterness is a root—if it stays, it spreads

Hebrews warns about a “root of bitterness” that grows, causes trouble, and impacts more than just you (Hebrews 12:15).

Bitterness rarely announces itself. It lingers quietly:

sarcasm becomes normal
cold distance becomes “boundaries” (even when it’s really resentment)
cynicism becomes your personality
distrust becomes your default

That’s why the notes hit it hard: Do not allow bitterness to linger and create a foothold. Forgive.

2) Forgiveness cancels a debt

One of the cleanest definitions from the notes is this:

Forgiveness is releasing the right to collect what I’m owed.

Because when someone hurts you, something feels owed:

an apology
respect
restitution
the “version of life” you should’ve had
acknowledgement
consequences

But forgiveness says:
“I’m not denying what happened. I’m releasing my right to hold this over you—and I’m placing justice in God’s hands.”

Don’t repay evil with evil—vengeance belongs to God

Romans 12 is direct:

Do not repay evil with evil…
Vengeance is the Lord’s. (Romans 12:17–19)

Revenge feels like control, but it’s a trap. It keeps you tied to the offense. It keeps the wound in charge.

Forgiveness is not letting them “win.”
Forgiveness is refusing to keep losing your peace.

“As Jesus forgives, so do I”

Colossians raises the standard:

“Forgive… as the Lord forgave you.” (Colossians 3:13)

That means forgiveness isn’t based on whether they earned it. It’s based on what Jesus has done in you—and what He’s calling you to live out through you.

3) The Cross is the Power and Pattern of Forgiveness

This is the center of the message:

The cross is both the power and the pattern of forgiveness.

Jesus—sinless, blameless—suffering on a cross… chose forgiveness .

So forgiveness isn’t weakness. It’s Christlikeness.
It’s not denial. It’s discipleship.

The main point: Take up your cross daily and follow Jesus

This is where it gets real, because forgiveness often isn’t a one-time event—it’s a repeated decision.

Jesus calls us to a daily cross:

daily surrender
daily release
daily obedience
daily choosing freedom

And when you ask, “How many times do I have to forgive?” Jesus’ answer (the “7x70” idea) points to a lifestyle, not a limit.

What to do this week

If you want a practical way to apply the message:

Name the debt honestly. What do you feel you’re owed?
Release your right to collect it. Say it to God clearly.
Close the foothold. Stop feeding the replay. Stop rehearsing the offense.
Bless where you can. Not because they deserve it—but because you refuse bitterness.
Practice daily forgiveness. When it comes back up, release it again.

A simple prayer...

Jesus, I release the debt I’ve been holding.
I close every foothold bitterness has created in me.
I trust You with justice. I choose forgiveness.
Teach me to take up my cross daily and follow You—free and clean in heart.
Amen.

Relationships feel harder than they used to.

We’re more connected, yet more isolated.
More informed, yet more offended.
And the mess keeps multiplying.

So the real question isn’t, “Why is the world so messy?”
It’s: Who is God going to use to shift the story?

Because God doesn’t just point out broken places—He calls people to rebuild them.

God Blesses Through Messy Families

We’re launching Bless This Mess because Scripture doesn’t pretend families are perfect. It shows the mess—but it also shows the moves that lead to healing.

God told Abraham:

“I will bless you… so that you will be a blessing… and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:1–3)

Here’s the shocking part: blessing was promised through a broken family.
Abraham’s household wasn’t polished. It was messy—fear-based decisions, half-truths, conflict patterns, jealousy, favoritism, betrayal, and blame-shifting.

Genesis doesn’t hide the dysfunction—and that’s good news.

Two big truths

God’s blessing is bigger than their dysfunction. If He could bless their mess, He can bless mine.
God uses people to bless what’s messy. Hurt people hurt people. Healed people heal people. Loved people love people.

Isaiah 58: When Heaven Ignores Religion

Week one is about Rebuilders , and there’s no better place to start than Isaiah 58 .

These were people who looked spiritual—fasting, praying, showing up—but their relationships were a wreck. They loved God in public, yet treated people poorly in private. And they couldn’t figure out why nothing was changing:

“Why have we fasted, but You have not seen?” (Isaiah 58:3)

God’s answer was blunt: you’re doing religious things, but your heart is still centered on yourself. Churchy on the outside, unchanged on the inside. That’s the kind of faith the world hates—and the kind heaven ignores.

Then God recalibrates them: real spirituality produces real restoration.

The Heart of a Rebuilder

1) Get over yourself

Their fasting was still about me. And that’s not just an ancient issue—it’s a modern one. We’ve been trained to filter everything through “What’s in it for me?”

But the New Testament is full of “one another”: love one another, forgive one another, pray for one another, build up one another. Jesus said the world would recognize His disciples by love for one another .

Nothing makes you more useful to God than the ability to get over yourself—choosing purpose over pleasure, towel over table.

2) Get in someone else’s corner

God says the fast He chooses looks like this:

break chains, set the oppressed free, feed the hungry, bring in the poor, clothe the naked (Isaiah 58:6–7)

The driving question of a Christlike life is: Who am I serving? Who am I helping? What need am I meeting?
Jesus “came not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45).

When we serve people, God breaks chains we can’t see.
Revival happens when we stop fighting with people and start fighting for people.

3) Get started on the work

Haggai comes with a simple command:

“Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house.” (Haggai 1:7–8)

You can’t rebuild everything in one day. But you can start .

Broken relationship? Start the conversation.
Broken person? Meet the need you can meet.
Broken community? Grab what you have and begin.

Blessed Are the Rebuilders

We’re living among ruins—fractured families, strained marriages, lonely people, shallow friendships.

God isn’t just calling out the mess.
He’s calling rebuilders .

People who get over themselves, get in someone else’s corner, and get started on the work.

Be a repairer of broken places.
A restorer of what’s been lost.
A blessing in the middle of the mess.

"Digging Ditches"

Some seasons don’t require a new plan—they require a new posture.

Leviticus 26 is one of those chapters that makes it plain: God’s love is unconditional, but His blessings are often conditional. Not because He’s withholding, but because He’s shaping. He sets a choice in front of His people— blessing or struggle —and then ties it to a word we don’t always like:

“If.”

“If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands…” (Leviticus 26:3)
“You will have such a surplus… you will need to clear out the old grain to make room for the new harvest.” (Leviticus 26:10)

That’s the theme of this season: making room. Clearing out space in our hearts, minds, and spirits for God to move something new in.

But here’s the tension: we’re in the middle of prayer and fasting, and for some people it’s not feeling powerful. You’ve been praying… and it feels like nothing is happening. You’ve been fasting… and you’ve been looking for a reason to mess up.

Prayer can feel like the least practical solution to real problems. It can feel passive—like sending a rescue flare into the sky and hoping someone sees it.

And yet, from heaven’s perspective, prayer is anything but passive.
James says the prayer of the righteous is effective and powerful .

So why does it feel so ineffective sometimes?

Because we often treat prayer like a last resort when God intended it to be a first response .

Sometimes the groundwork nobody sees is exactly what sets the stage for the miracle everybody needs.

The Story: A Miracle in a Dry Place (2 Kings 3)

In 2 Kings 3, God’s people are in a mess. The kingdoms are divided—Israel and Judah—forced into an uneasy alliance because Moab has rebelled. To live in peace, they have to go to war.

So King Joram (Israel) reaches out to King Jehoshaphat (Judah): “Will you fight with me?”
Jehoshaphat answers with unity: “We are one people… what’s mine is yours.”

And then they do what most of us do under pressure:

They start planning, not praying.

“Which route should we take?” (2 Kings 3:8)

They choose the wilderness route—indirect, dry, “safer” strategically—but it becomes the worst option spiritually. After seven days:

“They had no water for the army or their animals.” (2 Kings 3:9)

Now panic hits.

Joram says, essentially, “God brought us out here to destroy us.”
But Jehoshaphat finally asks the right question:

“Isn’t there a prophet of the LORD here? Let’s inquire of Yahweh…” (2 Kings 3:11)

And that’s the turning point. When strategy runs out, spirituality finally shows up.

How to Make Room for a Miracle

1) Pray First

Prayer often feels ineffective because we treat it like a last resort instead of a first response.

When we pray last, we end up in waterless places—then we cry out for a miracle.

God’s model is the opposite: PRAY FIRST.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer… present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds…” (Philippians 4:6–7)

When you pray first, peace stands guard— even when you don’t understand.

It’s like a boxer: the moment you drop your guard, you get hit. Prayer keeps your guard up. Not because everything suddenly makes sense—but because you’re no longer facing it alone.

And in the middle of this crisis, notice who isn’t panicking: Elisha. The prophet is in the camp too. While everyone else spirals, he knows how to hear from heaven.

2) Dig Deep

Elisha does something surprising before he gives direction:

“Bring me a musician.” (2 Kings 3:15)

Sometimes we want answers, but what we need first is presence . Worship helps us find God’s presence in dry places.

Then Elisha speaks God’s instruction:

“This is what the LORD says: ‘Dig ditch after ditch in this wadi.’” (2 Kings 3:16)

A wadi is a valley that’s dry most of the year—only filled during seasonal rains. It’s the last place you’d dig for water.

And that’s the point. God isn’t telling them to dig to find water.
He’s telling them to dig to hold and direct the water He’s going to send.

That’s what prayer and fasting can feel like: digging in dry ground.

It’s work.
It’s faith.
It’s obedience before evidence.

God says, “I’ll send the water… you dig the ditches.”

Think about the Suez Canal. In the 1860s, crews dug a trench through desert for about ten years (1859–1869). People watched like it was ridiculous—a canal in the desert? Then it opened in 1869: a channel linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea.

The canal didn’t create ships. It created a path.

That’s what ditches do. They don’t create the miracle. They create room for it to flow—and to stay.

If God answered every prayer you prayed this week, how much would actually change?

We can “pray” without praying—like saying sorry without repentance. There’s a difference between the habit of prayer and the heart of prayer. Digging deep means you stop using prayer for surface-level stuff and start bringing God your deepest fears, dreams, concerns, and needs.

If it’s big enough to worry about, it’s big enough to pray about.

3) Watch and Wait

Elisha says something that should reset your view of God:

“You will not see wind or rain, but the wadi will be filled with water… This is easy in the LORD’s sight.” (2 Kings 3:17–18)

What feels impossible to you is easy to Him.

So after you pray first and dig deep, there’s one posture left:

Watch and wait.

Not passive waiting—faithful waiting. The kind that says, “I’ve obeyed. I’ve believed. Now it’s only a matter of time.”

Then comes one of the most powerful lines in the story:

“About the time for the grain offering the next morning, water suddenly came…” (2 Kings 3:20)

That detail matters. The grain offering was a daily act of worship.

So they worshipped before they saw the water.

That’s the question:

Are you worshipping while you wait?
Are you trusting God’s character enough to praise Him when you’re weary, dusty, and it feels like you’ve been working without results?

Because God said: you won’t see wind, you won’t see rain… but all of a sudden there will be water in your wadi.

Dig Some Ditches

This is why prayer makes room for miracles. It’s doing what you can do to prepare for God to do what only He can do.

“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
“If my people… pray… then I will…” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

So here’s the challenge: dig some ditches this year.
Don’t just hope for a move of God—make room for it.

Pray first.
Dig deep.
Watch and wait.

God sends the water.
We dig the ditches.

"When It Hasn't Happened Yet"

There is almost nothing I hate more in life than waiting.

If impatience were a spiritual gift, I’d be on a world tour lecturing about it.

I will drive longer distances just to avoid stop-and-go traffic.
I’ll leave a restaurant with a 30-minute wait and spend 45 minutes trying to find another one.
Waiting in lines? Miserable.
Doctor’s offices? The worst. You sit in the waiting room, get moved to another room, and start wondering if the doctor has forgotten you exist.

And maybe the most frustrating thing of all—watching your phone buffer.

That spinning wheel.
That frozen screen.
That moment when everything pauses and you’re left wondering if it’s ever going to load.

Sometimes life buffers too.

Good things feel like they’re coming… but not fast enough.
Dreams feel like they’re stuck loading.
Promises feel delayed.

And for many people, it’s not the pain that’s hardest—it’s the not knowing.

Not knowing when things will change.
Or if they ever will.

When Waiting Starts to Erode Faith

Waiting seasons have a way of messing with our mindset.

A job opportunity that almost works out… again and again.
A relationship that feels like it should be further along by now.
A marriage that hasn’t healed yet.
A prodigal who still hasn’t come home.
A diagnosis that hasn’t changed.
A prayer you’ve been praying for years with no update.

At first, faith doesn’t disappear.
It slowly erodes.

You still believe in God—but you stop expecting Him to do good things.

So you lower your expectations to protect yourself from disappointment.
Sometimes you even shift your goals altogether.
Distraction replaces discipleship.
Survival replaces surrender.

Waiting doesn’t kill faith—it exposes what we worship.

Do we want the hand of God …
or the heart of God ?

What Waiting Is Actually Doing to Us

Neuroscience has discovered something fascinating: slow processes shape the brain more deeply than fast rewards.

Waiting strengthens impulse control, long-term thinking, and emotional stability.
Quick gratification trains the brain for anxiety, restlessness, and dissatisfaction.

Scripture and science agree on this truth:

Waiting exposes what we trust.
Waiting strengthens what we practice.
Waiting shapes who we become.

Isaiah says, “Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.”

What if waiting isn’t what’s holding you back?
What if waiting is what’s positioning you for God’s promises?

Two People Who Lived in the Waiting Room

The Christmas story introduces us to two lesser-known figures—Simeon and Anna.

When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple after His birth, they encountered two people who had been waiting for decades.

Simeon was an old man who had been promised he wouldn’t die until he saw the Messiah.

Anna was a prophetess—widowed early in life—who spent decades worshiping, fasting, and praying in the temple. Scripture says, “She did not depart from the temple.”

When life took a wrong turn, Anna didn’t run from God.

She ran to God.

Her faith didn’t become occasional—it took up residence at the center of her life.

And because she stayed faithful in the waiting, she recognized Jesus the moment He arrived.

Simeon and Anna didn’t just witness the promise.
They became part of the story because of how they waited.

How to Win in Waiting Seasons

1. Choose Action Over Apathy

Waiting does not mean inactivity.

The prophet Habakkuk waited for God to restore His people, and God told him to write the vision and stay ready to run with it.

When God says “wait,” He’s not saying “do nothing.”
He’s saying, “Stay ready. Stay faithful. Stay obedient.”

The promise is not just a destination to arrive at—it’s a journey to live out.

God’s delays are not punishment; they are preparation.

Waiting stretches the soul so it can actually receive what God wants to give.

There are things God is working on that you can’t see yet.
Other people. Other circumstances. Other pieces of the story.

Waiting doesn’t mean nothing is happening.
It means God is working beyond your line of sight.

2. Choose Hope Over Frustration

Hope deferred makes the heart sick—but God rarely puts timestamps on promises.

We do.

And when we fixate on then, we lose joy now.

Jesus reminded His disciples that God holds not just chronos (minutes and days) but kairos —appointed moments and divine seasons.

If we trust God with the what, He can be trusted with the when.

Frustration is passively distrusting the future.
Hope is actively trusting God in the present.

Not now does not mean not ever.

If it’s not God’s time, you can’t force it.
And when it is God’s time, you can’t stop it.

3. Choose Faithfulness Over Escape

Anna was present when Jesus arrived because she never left.

She didn’t disengage.
She didn’t relocate her faith.
She didn’t quietly withdraw to protect herself from disappointment.

God blesses stayers.

Waiting is staying rooted—continuing to show up, worship, pray, and believe even when it feels like nothing is changing.

When you choose to wait on God, you position yourself to see God’s promises.

God Never Wastes a Waiting Season

God never wastes the waiting.

He uses it.
He forms us in it.
He does some of His deepest work in the dark—when prayers are still pending and promises feel delayed.

Waiting is where faith grows roots.
Waiting is where hope is purified.
Waiting is where strength is renewed.

Anna waited decades—and in that waiting, God didn’t just keep a promise.
He shaped a person who would recognize it when it arrived.

So if you’re waiting today—on a breakthrough, a healing, a restoration, a door to open—hear this clearly:

God is not ignoring you.
He is not punishing you.
And He is not finished with you.

God is preparing you for what you’re praying for, and preparing the promise to meet the person you’re becoming.

So don’t lose heart.
Don’t lower your hope.
Don’t uproot your faith.

Choose action over apathy.
Choose hope over frustration.
Choose faithfulness over escape.

God never wastes the waiting.

"When You're on the Outside"

Have you ever felt like an outsider?

Like everyone else got the memo—except you.

This month, in our Evergreen series, we’ve been talking about how to live through hard seasons. We chose the evergreen tree as our symbol because it stays alive and green when everything else looks dead. It’s a picture of the promise God gives to those who trust Him:

“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord
and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
with roots that reach deep into the water…
Their leaves stay green,
and they never stop producing fruit.”
(Jeremiah 17:7–8)

Faith can still grow in hard seasons. You can still flourish—even when life feels cold.

The Feeling of Being on the Outside

Recently, my family discovered a new favorite game on a road trip: Impostor. If you’ve ever played, you know how it works—everyone knows who belongs except the one person who doesn’t. And that person feels exposed, unsure, and constantly afraid of being found out.

It turns out my kids are really good liars.

But isn’t that how life feels sometimes?

We all know what it’s like to pretend we belong while secretly feeling like frauds. One of my favorite Christmas movies, Home Alone, captures this perfectly.

Kevin is the ultimate outsider—misunderstood, pushed aside, and literally left behind. To protect himself, he pretends to be an insider. He creates an illusion that everything is fine, even though the house is empty.

That’s what many of us do. We work hard, curate the image, and convince everyone we’re okay—when the truth is, we feel alone. That gap between how we feel and what we present is often called impostor syndrome .

Research shows that nearly 70% of people experience it at some point. High achievers, leaders, and people stepping into new roles feel it the most. You can be invited, successful, and called—and still feel like you don’t belong.

Outsiders in the Christmas Story

The Christmas story is filled with people living through hard seasons—but none more overlooked than the shepherds.

Luke tells us they were nearby when Jesus was born—close in proximity, but far from the action. Shepherds lived outside the city, outside religious systems, and outside social acceptance. They were considered unclean, uneducated, and untrustworthy.

They felt:

Unworthy — their work kept them from religious rituals
Inadequate — socially and spiritually
Unloved — rejected by society and excluded from community life

Sound familiar?

Many of us feel like shepherds. We know our past. We know our failures. We walk into church singing worship songs while carrying secrets no one else knows.

Holidays can amplify that feeling—being on the outside, looking in.

Heaven’s Message to Outsiders

And yet, the angels didn’t appear to kings, priests, or insiders.

They appeared to them.

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.”
(Luke 2:10)

God doesn’t hand out golden tickets to the deserving. He offers an invitation to all people.

The shepherds show us how to respond to God’s invitation:

1. Recognize that God chooses you

God interrupted their ordinary night. Even when you’re not looking for Him, God draws near.

2. Reject fear-based religion

Fear never leads us to God—faith does. Following rules doesn’t make us worthy. Authentic faith does.

“We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ… no matter who we are.”
(Romans 3:22)

3. Respond without delay
The shepherds didn’t clean themselves up or overthink it. They simply went. They brought no gifts—just themselves.

God doesn’t want what you have to offer. He just wants you to come and see.

You’re Invited In

The Christmas story isn’t about perfect people finding God.

It’s about outsiders being invited in.

Because Jesus came, no one has to stay outside the window anymore.

If you’ve felt on the outside—of faith, family, hope, or purpose—know this: God didn’t come to leave you out. He came to invite you in.

Not to religion.
Not to rules.

But to experience His presence for yourself.

You’re invited.
All you have to do is come and see.

"When You Can't Please People"

How often do you catch yourself worrying about what people think of you?

If we’re honest, most of us live with a quiet awareness of other people’s opinions—what they might say, think, post, or whisper. And culturally, that pressure is only growing. Studies show that 62% of Americans fear being judged by others , and among Gen Z, that number rises to 82% . We live in a strange moment in history where we have more access to each other’s lives than ever before—and yet feel more anxious, insecure, and approval-hungry than ever.

The average person checks their phone nearly 100 times a day. Social platforms track how scrolling impacts self-esteem. Many people admit deleting posts that don’t get enough likes. And nothing makes us cringe quite like an old trend or post we once thought was cool.

Welcome to the age of FOPO —the Fear of People’s Opinions.

The Trap of Living for Approval

At first, worrying about what others think may seem harmless. But left unchecked, it can quietly shape the direction of our lives. It can warp how we see ourselves, silence our faith, and keep us from becoming who God created us to be.

Scripture speaks clearly to this struggle:

“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” — Proverbs 29:25

A snare is a trap. And when we give too much weight to people’s opinions, their words can become a barrier between what God says and how we live. Fixating on what people think about you is often the fastest way to forget what God says about you.

Many of us can point to a moment when a dream was dismissed, a calling was questioned, or faith was discouraged by someone else’s opinion. Sometimes it’s intentional. Often it’s not. But the result is the same—we stop believing, stop stepping out, and never see what God might have done.

The opposite of fearing people isn’t ignoring them—it’s trusting God . And trusting God doesn’t always make sense by human standards. God often calls us to do things people won’t understand or support.

So the question becomes: What are you measuring your life by—people’s opinions or God’s design?

When God’s Will Costs You Something

One of the clearest examples of this tension is found in the Christmas story through the life of Joseph.

Joseph was engaged to Mary in a culture where engagement was legally binding—ending it required divorce. When Mary became pregnant, Joseph faced an impossible situation. From a human perspective, none of it made sense. Even if he believed Mary, he knew others wouldn’t. Staying with her would cost him his reputation, relationships, livelihood, and future.

Joseph was torn between what was easy and what was right .

Scripture tells us he planned to divorce Mary quietly—to do the honorable thing while protecting his name. But then God intervened.

An angel appeared to Joseph and told him not to be afraid—to take Mary as his wife because the child she carried was from the Holy Spirit. In that moment, Joseph learned a life-changing truth:

Pleasing God often means disappointing people.

People may have questioned Joseph’s integrity, but God affirmed his calling. People focused on his reputation, but God focused on his obedience. And Joseph had to decide whose voice mattered more.

Living for God Instead of People

Joseph’s story teaches us how to live free from the fear of people.

First, if you aren’t willing to be criticized, you aren’t ready to be used by God.
Anything useful gets worn. Anything impactful takes some damage. The people who make the greatest difference often endure the greatest criticism. If you live for people’s applause, you’ll eventually be crushed by their criticism. But when you live for God’s approval, people’s opinions lose their power.

Second, God can use a difficult “yes” to make a big difference.
Joseph and Mary said yes to a plan that cost them personally—but changed the world eternally. True worship always involves sacrifice. If obedience costs nothing, it accomplishes nothing. A difficult yes may feel heavy in the moment, but God uses it to accomplish far more than we can imagine.

Finally, faith in God sets us free from the fear of people.
Fear of people traps us—shrinking our courage, silencing our calling, and stealing our joy. Freedom comes when we transfer our trust from people to God.

When we make people big and God small, fear grows. But when we magnify God, fear loses its grip.

Mary captured this truth in her song of worship when she said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” What you magnify becomes your master.

Evergreen Faith

Evergreen faith doesn’t mean life is easy. It means faith endures through rejection, misunderstanding, and hard seasons. It stays rooted when opinions shift and voices grow loud.

You may never know what God might set in motion through one act of obedience. One invitation. One step of faith. One difficult yes.

When you can’t please people, choose to trust God. His voice is steady. His promises are sure. And faith rooted in Him will remain green—even in the harshest seasons.

"When the Stars Go Out"

There’s something magical about taking the kids to a Christmas tree farm every year.
The smell of pine.
The hunt for the “perfect” tree.
The family debate about which one is too tall, too skinny, or too lopsided.

And of course—after all that effort—we cut the perfect tree down, drag it home, set it up in the living room… and watch it slowly die.

The irony hits me every year:

We bring an evergreen inside only to watch it turn brown.

Yet the whole reason the evergreen became a Christmas symbol is because—unlike other trees—it never browns. It stays green in harsh winters. It thrives when everything else is bare. Its strength is not in its environment… but in its roots.

And honestly? That’s a picture many of us need this time of year.

Because while the world is singing “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” our hearts don’t always agree.

For many people, the holidays stir up grief, loneliness, pressure, depression, or memories they wish they could forget. Some are struggling with burdens nobody else sees. Some are asking quiet questions nobody else hears.

This is why we are launching a series called EVERGREEN — A Faith That Thrives in Every Season.

Because God never promised us a life without harsh winters… but He did promise we could remain alive, rooted, and green through them.

“Blessed are those who trust in the LORD… They are like trees planted along a riverbank…
Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.”
—Jeremiah 17:7–8

This isn’t naïve optimism.
It’s real hope.
And it’s the kind of hope woven into the Christmas story itself.

When the Stars Go Out

Most of us know about the Wise Men—the Magi who followed a star from the East to find Jesus.
But we often miss something important:

They started the journey with a star… but at some point on the road, the star disappeared.

Think about that.
These men traveled 900+ miles on camel, across deserts and mountains, guided by a heavenly sign…and then the light went out.

No GPS.
No roadmap.
No star.

Just questions.

Maybe you’ve been there too.

You had clarity, then life shifted.
You had momentum, then the future flatlined.
You were following what God showed you… and suddenly you don’t know what to do next.

I’ve lived that.

After seven years in a ministry I planned to give my life to, everything fell apart. The chapter closed. Relationships broke. I walked away with more questions than answers. Jocelyn and I felt lost—unsure of what God was doing or where He wanted us next.

But what we discovered is what the Wise Men discovered:

Uncertainty is not the absence of God.

Uncertainty is an invitation to trust God's character.

Even when the stars go out.

Three Ways to Walk Through Starless Seasons

1. Walk on What God Showed You Last

When the star vanished, the Wise Men didn’t quit.
They didn’t turn around.
They kept moving in the last direction God had given.

Sometimes the faith you need today comes from what God showed you yesterday.

He hasn’t abandoned your calling.
He hasn’t walked away from what He started in you.
When clarity is low, faithfulness becomes everything.

Faithfulness is what carries you through the fog.

2. Don’t Walk Through Uncertainty Alone

When the Magi reached Jerusalem, they asked for help.
Herod consulted the scribes, who consulted Scripture.
And Scripture pointed them to Bethlehem.

Even Wise Men needed wise counsel.

When you don’t know what to do, isolation is the enemy.

This is why community matters.
This is why groups matter.

And this is why Scripture matters—because God will often confirm what you can’t see through the people and the Word He’s placed in your life.

Sometimes the right people get you farther than the right plan.

3. Clarity Comes in Walking, Not Waiting

Many people say, “Don’t move until you know what to do.”
But honestly? That’s usually fear talking.

Abraham didn’t know where he was going—he just walked.
And as he walked, God revealed what was next.

When Jocelyn and I were still hurting and unsure, people kept asking us to start a church. We weren’t confident… but we were obedient. We bought plane tickets to a church planters conference—not because we had clarity, but because we had a nudge.

And it was in the walking that God brought clarity.
Not before it.

You can’t steer a parked car. God leads people who move.

The God Who Sees You

My favorite part of the Wise Men’s journey is simple:

They lost the star… but God never lost them.

And at the right moment—just as they moved in obedience—the star reappeared.

“When they saw the star, they were overjoyed beyond measure.”
—Matthew 2:10

Their joy wasn’t because the journey was perfect.
Their joy was because God was faithful.

And that’s the promise for you too.

If You’re in a Starless Season…

Maybe you’re unsure of your next step.
Maybe you’re hurting, confused, or afraid.
Maybe you’re wondering if you made a wrong turn.

Hear this:

You may not see the way forward.
But the One who sees you knows exactly where you are.

Keep walking.

Keep connecting with God’s people.
Keep seeking God in Scripture.
Don’t let a temporary season kill your faith.

Because winter doesn’t have the final word. Roots do.
And God is making you evergreen.

"HELLO MY NAME IS"

One of my favorite childhood movies was The Lion King . There’s a moment when Rafiki confronts Simba and says, “I am not the one who is confused… you don’t even know who you are.”

That line hits differently when you’re grown.

Because the truth is—most of us wrestle with identity.
And today, I want to ask you two life-shaping questions.

Questions that you cannot answer accurately unless you understand them together :

1. Who do you say you are?
2. Who do you say He is?

Your answer to one shapes your confidence in the other.

1. Who Do You Say You Are?

Most of us have two answers to this question:

The superficial answer we give people
And the uncomfortable truth we keep hidden

But God refuses to leave us in the version of ourselves we have settled for.

Throughout Scripture, God steps into the lives of ordinary, insecure, broken people—and renames them, reframes them, and releases them into purpose.

Let’s look at a few:

Abraham — “I am old; I have no kids.”

God says: “You will be the father of nations.” (Genesis 17:3–6)

Abraham saw limitation.
God saw legacy.

Jacob — “I am a deceiver.”

Jacob spent his early life lying, manipulating, and running.
Until God stopped him and asked, “What is your name?” (Genesis 32:27)

Jacob answered with the truth he believed about himself.
God answered with the truth He believed: “You are Israel.”

Not who you were… but who you’re becoming.

Gideon — “I am weak and afraid.”

Hiding in a winepress, doing a job that didn’t belong there.
Yet God calls him: “Mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:11–12)

God will call you victorious before you even know there’s a battle coming.

David — “I am the overlooked kid.”

Even his father didn’t bring him to the lineup when Samuel came.
But God anointed David king while he was still smelling like sheep.

People won’t always save you a seat at the table.
But God prepares one for you.

Delay isn’t denial—it’s development.

Saul — “I am a persecutor.”

Everyone saw danger.
God saw destiny.

“ He is my chosen instrument. ” (Acts 9:13–16)

Ananias had a worldly view of Saul.
God had a heavenly one.

Simon — “I’m just a fisherman.”

Jesus called him by a new name— Peter, the rock —long before Peter ever acted like one.
Long before he failed, denied, or fell apart.

God knows your weaknesses… and chooses you anyway.

God’s View vs. Your View

God doesn’t define you by:

your past
your family’s expectations
your failures
your limitations

He defines you by His purpose.

And Scripture gives you language for who you truly are:

I am chosen. (1 Peter 2:9)
I am known. (Psalm 139)
I am loved. (John 3:16)
I am free. (John 8:36)
I am His child. (Romans 8:15)
I am redeemed from my past. (Psalm 103:12)

I am who He says I am.

He wants to rename the places shame has tried to label:

Alone → Loved
Depressed → Joy
Anxious → Peace
Addicted → Free
Broken → Healed
Lost → Found

“ There is now no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. ” - Romans 8:1

Nothing—no fear, no sin, no shame—can separate you from His love. (Romans 8:38–39)

2. Who Do You Say He Is?

Your identity is only as strong as your revelation of Jesus.

Jesus asked His disciples:

“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
“But who do you say I am?”
—Matthew 16:13–15

Some answered with what they heard others say.
But Peter answered from conviction:

“You are the Messiah.”

Your identity and your stability in life rise and fall with your revelation of who He is to you .

When life is easy, it’s simple to say He is Lord.
When life is hard, your belief is proven.

His name is greater:

greater than your past
greater than addiction
greater than the diagnosis
greater than the trial
greater than the mountain

God has given Jesus “the name above all names.” (Philippians 2:9–11)

Even in suffering, He is still who He says He is.

“ What we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal. ” - Romans 8:18

You Don’t Know Who You Are Until You Know Who He Is

Identity flows from intimacy.

The more convinced you are of Him, the more confident you become in you.

Let Him define you.
Let Him rename you.
Let Him reshape the way you see your own story.

Because the real you—the you God sees—is already loved, already chosen, already called, already redeemed, and already set free.

So… who do you say you are?
And who do you say He is?

Your life will rise to the level of your answer.

"Grow a Garden"

Have you ever noticed how we avoid anything that takes a long time?

We don’t mind speed… in fact, we demand it. Fast food. Fast shipping. Fast results. If Amazon doesn’t offer 2-day delivery, many of us won’t even buy it. We hate slow traffic, slow lines, slow processes… and honestly, we avoid slow conversations, slow healing, and slow change.

But here’s the tension:
God works promises through processes. And processes take time.

Most of us have missed God-given progress simply because impatience talked us out of what was actually working. Slow doesn’t feel spiritual. Gradual doesn’t feel glorious. But faith—biblical faith—is far more like farming than instant success.

The Roblox Version of Life We Wish We Had

Recently I asked my son Rylen about his favorite video game, Grow a Garden.
I was shocked: the entire game is about planting seeds, waiting for them to grow, and selling the crops. Kids go crazy over it—collecting rare seeds like maple resin and crimson thorn.

The only reason the game is fun is because the process is condensed .
Seeds grow in minutes, not months.

And if we’re honest, that’s how we wish life worked.

We want the Roblox version of legacy—leveling up in minutes, instant impact, no resistance, no waiting.

But real legacy doesn't work like that.
If you want to change the landscape of your life—of your family—of your future—it takes small, consistent investments over time.

You rarely feel the change while it’s happening.
You don’t see the progress day by day.
And that’s when we start to wonder:

“Does it even matter?”
“Is this changing anything?”
“Is all this sowing actually working?”

Scripture answers with a resounding yes.

The Law of the Harvest

“Whatever one sows, that will he also reap.” – Galatians 6:7

God built the universe on this principle.

1. Whatever You Sow, Will Grow

You can’t sow comfort and expect calling.
You can’t sow dysfunction and expect a healthy home.
You can’t sow irresponsibility and expect blessing.

A seed seems small, but it has exponential potential.

A single apple seed can produce a tree that produces hundreds of apples every year—each apple containing new seeds that could multiply into thousands of trees in a decade.

One seed becomes a forest.

This is why the seeds you sow today matter more than you realize:

Your habits
Your patterns
Your words
Your financial choices
Your spiritual disciplines
Your decisions

Seeds become landscapes—slowly, quietly, inevitably.

The person with deep spiritual roots didn’t stumble into maturity—they sowed Scripture, prayer, worship, and obedience.
The couple with a healthy home didn’t get lucky—they sowed grace, time, forgiveness, and healing.

The generous person didn’t wait to feel rich—they sowed stewardship.

The best time to plant a tree was decades ago. The next best time?
Today.

2. Whatever Is Growing… Was Planted

Jesus tells a story in Matthew 13 about a field where wheat and weeds grew together.

The farmer planted good seed.
But at night, the enemy planted weeds—tares—right beside the wheat.

At first, everything looked the same.
But over time, the truth showed up.

Some of us are living in fields where someone planted:

rejection
disappointment
fear
labels
wounds
offense

Sometimes we planted it.
Sometimes the enemy planted it.
Sometimes others planted things in us long before we knew the difference.

And our first reaction is to rip the weeds out immediately.
Fix it now. Solve it now. Change it now.

But the farmer says:

“No… you’ll uproot the wheat if you do. Let them grow together until the harvest.”

Your life will always be a mixed field.

Good and bad growing at the same time.
Breakthrough and frustration.
Healing and struggle.
Wheat and weeds.

The enemy doesn’t need to burn your field to rob your harvest—he just needs to make you reactionary instead of visionary .
If he can keep you pulling weeds, he can keep you from planting good seed.

What you focus on determines what grows.

3. What You Cultivate Creates Your Legacy

Sowing starts something.
Cultivating grows it.
Legacy is the result.

Before God ever asked Adam to preach a sermon, sing a song, or lead a meeting…
He gave him a garden.

“The Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it.” — Genesis 2:15

Your first calling—my first calling—isn't consumption.
It’s cultivation.

Work the field you were given.
Watch over the seeds God placed in your hands.
Protect the soil of your soul.
Water the things God wants to grow.

You can’t control everything that gets planted in your life.
But you can choose what you cultivate.

Legacy isn’t about perfection.
It’s about faithfulness .

It’s about staying in the garden long enough to see fruit.
It’s about refusing to quit when the process feels slow.
It’s about trusting that God remembers every seed, every sacrifice, every act of obedience.

And He does.

Don’t Cancel Your Own Harvest

The enemy doesn’t want you to know this:

The only person who can cancel your harvest… is you.

Not the enemy.
Not your past.
Not your environment.
Not your weaknesses.

Just you—in the moment you give up.

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap… if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9

You might feel like your field has more weeds than wheat.
You may feel like you’ve sown years of disappointment.
You may feel tired, discouraged, or tempted to quit.

But hear this:

If you keep sowing… you will see a harvest.
If you keep watering… God will bring growth.
If you keep cultivating… God will change the landscape.

Right here.
Right now.
In this field.
In your family.
In your future.
In your legacy.

God is faithful.
And you will reap—
if you don’t give up.

"Brick By Brick"

You ever notice that growth never feels like growth while it’s happening?

When I was a kid, I was the smallest in my class. Too short for the carnival rides. Too short to feel “grown.” I even remember going to bed without a shirt one night because someone told me that’s how you grew taller. (Spoiler: it didn’t work. Still 5’9”.)

Whether you're going from adolescence to adulthood or trying to make gains at the gym, growth is gradual. It sneaks up on you.

In our home, we had a measuring stick on the wall. Every few months, we’d line the kids up, mark their height, and date it. And even though we lived with them every day, we were always surprised. We didn’t notice the change until we measured it. The growth had been happening all along.

That’s how spiritual growth works too. You don’t always feel it. You don’t always see it. But if you keep showing up, keep saying yes to God, keep building brick by brick—one day you’ll look back and realize the small steps were actually steady gains.

And that’s what legacy really is:
Not what you build fast, but what you build to last.

As Eugene Peterson famously wrote,

“Discipleship is a long obedience in the same direction.”

We live in a world of instant gratification—instant results, instant feedback, instant everything. But you can microwave a meal; you can’t microwave maturity. Legacy requires longevity. Faithfulness. Consistency. Daily decisions that build tomorrow’s blessings.

Nehemiah: A Brick-by-Brick Builder

Nehemiah was part of a generation that inherited ruined walls, burned gates, and compromised faith. Yet instead of accepting the rubble, he decided to rebuild it. Brick by brick .

When he heard that Jerusalem’s walls were broken and its gates burned, it broke him. People had returned home from exile. The temple had been rebuilt. Worship had restarted. But without walls and gates, the city had no security, no definition, no protection.

They had church services—but no boundaries.

Nehemiah’s response was simple but powerful:

“Send me.”
Put the bricks in my hand.

He surveyed the damage, identified the broken places, and started the long, grueling work of rebuilding the city God loved.

And in his story, we discover three truths about building legacy in our own lives.

1. The Boundaries You Build Today Shape the Blessings You Live In Tomorrow

Walls weren’t just protection—they were definition. Without them, everything bleeds together. People lose their sense of where they end and the enemy begins.

Dr. Henry Cloud says:

“Boundaries define what is me and what is not me.”

Many of us are living spiritually “boundary-less” lives.

Always saying yes to everyone
Feeling stretched thin, resentful, anxious
Carrying what God never asked us to
Letting fear, comparison, shame, or temptation walk right into our hearts

Walls matter.

If you want relationships to be blessed—build boundaries around them.
If you want your family to flourish—set limits that protect it.
If you want peace—learn to say no now so you can say yes later.

“No” is a wall word.
A legacy word.

Some blessings only grow in the soil created by boundaries.

2. What You Give Access To Will Shape What You Hand Down

Walls define the boundary. Gates decide the access.

Nehemiah didn’t just rebuild walls—he restored gates and appointed gatekeepers. Because legacy isn’t just about what you build; it’s about what you protect.

A city with walls but open gates is still vulnerable.

So is a life.

What gets access to your:

• Heart

What you love shapes who you become.

• Mind

You cannot live a positive life with a negative mind.

• Mouth

Words shape worlds. Criticism, contempt, and sarcasm tear down what love is trying to build.

• Relationships

Dr. John Gottman identifies four “relationship destroyers”:
criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling.

If we don’t guard the gates, the enemy doesn’t need to tear us down—he can simply walk in.

Guarding access is not about fear.
It’s about intentionality.

Close the gates to the enemy so you can open them to blessing.

3. You Must Stay in the Work to See What God Is Building

Rebuilding Jerusalem didn’t happen overnight. It took time. Sweat. Resolve. Resistance. The enemy mocked, threatened, lied, and tried to lure Nehemiah into distraction.

His response?

“I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down.” — Nehemiah 6:3

That’s the heart of a legacy builder.

You’re doing a great work in your marriage.
You’re doing a great work in your parenting.
You’re doing a great work breaking generational patterns.
You’re doing a great work building faith in your home.
You’re doing a great work serving God and loving people.

Don’t come down.

The enemy loves to attack builders.
But God loves to bless them.

And if you’ll keep placing bricks—showing up, obeying, loving, forgiving, guarding, growing—God will build something through you that future generations will thank you for.

Brick by Brick, Your Legacy Is Being Built

Maybe you’re living in the ruins of someone else’s decisions.
Maybe you’re rebuilding what was broken in your family.
Maybe you’re the first in your line to follow Jesus.

Hear this:
You can be the one who reverses the curse.
You can be the one who rebuilds the walls.
You can be the one who hands down blessing instead of brokenness.

Legacy isn’t loud.
It’s steady.
Faithful.
Brick by brick.

God is building something in you that will outlast you.

So pick up your brick.
Guard your gate.
Stay on the wall.
You’re doing a great work.

And what you build today—someone you love will live inside tomorrow.

Facing Generational Giants | Week 2

LOVE WHAT YOU LEAVE | WEEK 2

"FACING GENERATIONAL GIANTS"

Ever heard a weird saying passed down through your family? Maybe it’s something your dad or grandma used to say that made no sense to anyone outside your house. My dad had a few of those — “tadpole slap a whale,” “no piece,” and one of my mom’s classics, “busier than a one-armed paperhanger.”

It’s funny how we inherit sayings — but we also inherit something deeper.

The Bible talks about this in Jeremiah 31:29 :

“The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”

In other words — the parents ate bad grapes, and now the kids are the ones tasting it.
That’s what inspired our Sour Showdown video this week. (If you missed it — my son Rylen and I put our taste buds to the test so you could get the point!)

Here’s the question:
�� What am I putting on the next generation’s plate?
�� How do my decisions taste to them?

Because what feeds me is forming them.

1. Parents Leave Patterns

The proverb in Jeremiah came from a generation living in exile. Their parents had turned from God, and the result was seventy years of slavery in Babylon. The next generation was born into the consequences of decisions they didn’t make.

But God was ready to change that story. He said, “The days are coming when they will no longer say this.”

Every generation gets a choice.

We’re not cursed — we’re conditioned.
Our family shapes us — physically, emotionally, spiritually.
Their choices become our normal.

We see it in Scripture:

Abraham lied about Sarah.
Isaac did the same thing.
Jacob deceived his brother.
Jacob’s sons lied to him.

Patterns repeat — until someone chooses to break them.

Peter put it this way:

“You were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors.” – 1 Peter 1:18

You may have been shaped by where you came from — but you don’t have to stay there.

2. Patterns Leave Problems

Here’s the truth:

The next generation will have to fight what the previous generation refused to face.

That’s what happened to Israel in the wilderness.
Twelve spies saw the same land — ten came back afraid. They ran from the giants and passed fear down like a family recipe.

For forty years, they wandered — stuck outside the promise — because fear became their normal.
And their children had to face the very same giants they had avoided.

Maybe that hits home.
Maybe your family didn’t talk about feelings.
Maybe you learned that silence equals peace, or control equals strength.
Maybe you inherited a scarcity mindset — “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
Maybe you inherited religion but not relationship — “We believe in God, but that’s personal.”

Maybe you inherited broken marriage patterns — “That’s just how it is.”

Every family has giants.
And when we don’t face them — they shape the way our children live.

The good news?
It may run in your bloodline, but it can stop at the blood of Jesus.

3. Decisions Determine Destinies

The wilderness generation ran from the fight — but their children, led by Joshua, faced it and saw God’s promises come true.

It only takes one person to change generations.

Jacob was that person.
Born into a flawed family, he repeated their patterns — lies, deception, broken relationships. But one night at the River Jabbok, Jacob stopped running. He wrestled with God and said, “I won’t let You go until You bless me.”

That decision didn’t just change his night — it changed his name. God called him Israel — “one who prevails with God.”

Jacob’s decision became his descendants’ identity.

Your decisions today can redefine your family’s destiny.
Old patterns aren’t as strong as new decisions.
What came from behind you can’t compare to what’s ahead of you.

The Bottom Line

Parents leave patterns.
Patterns leave problems.
But decisions determine destinies.

You might not have been handed peace — but you can leave it.
You might not have been raised with faith — but you can plant it.
You might not have seen healthy relationships — but you can model them.

It only takes one to shift a family story.
One heart surrendered. One life laid down. One person who decides, “It stops with me.”

“You may have been affected by what came before you — but you are not defined by it.”
Face your giants. Change your story. Love what you leave.

"BETTER LATE THAN NEVER"

Trail Reviews & Life Lessons

My wife Jocelyn and I love being outdoors. A few months ago, we took the family hiking in Broken Bow. Let’s just say — the trail was a lot tougher than expected. We saw families with toddlers, elderly hikers, even people in flip-flops… and we started to think, “What did we get ourselves into?”

Turns out, we probably should’ve read the reviews.

Because two people can walk the same trail and have completely different experiences. One calls it breathtaking ; another calls it miserable .

Kind of like these real National Park reviews:

“Yellowstone? Smelled like rotten eggs.”
“The Grand Canyon? Just a big hole. My wife divorced me there.”
“Yosemite? Too many trees. Not enough stores.”

It’s funny — but it also says something about perspective.

There are two kinds of people on the trail:

Those who try to leave no trace , and
Those who try to leave it better than they found it .

And honestly? There’s no such thing as leaving no trace. We’re all leaving something. Our choices — how we spend our time, use our gifts, raise our families — they shape the experience of whoever comes after us.

That’s what this new series, Love What You Leave , is all about: How to leave a legacy worth loving.

When Potential Meets Regret

If you’ve ever felt like you wasted time or blew opportunities, you’re in good company.
The Bible has a guy for that — his name’s Samson .

Samson had all the potential in the world. Born with divine purpose. Gifted with supernatural strength. A literal hero-in-the-making.
But instead of using his strength to deliver others, he used it to chase revenge, women, and personal comfort.

He was built for deliverance but lived like a diva.

Samson’s story is a warning — and a mirror.
Because we all have areas where we’ve been strong, but not strategic.
We’ve carried city gates… but dropped spiritual commitments.

Samson’s life looked powerful on the outside but aimless on the inside.
He kept winning fights but losing his legacy.

1. Don’t Waste What You’ve Been Given

Samson’s biggest mistake wasn’t losing his strength — it was misusing it.
He used his God-given gifts to win temporary victories, but never built anything that lasted.

We can do the same thing.
We spend blessings meant to change generations on things that only last a moment.

Our time , talent , and treasure were never meant to just serve us.
They’re meant to serve purpose.

Intentional people live by purpose.
Reactionary people live by impulse.

Legacy doesn’t happen by accident — it’s the result of intentionality.
There’s something stronger than Samson’s strength: faithfulness.

2. Don’t Trade Next for Now

Samson’s downfall wasn’t sudden — it was slow. One compromise at a time.

He broke every vow that made him strong:

He touched what was dead,
He drank what dulled his senses,
He let someone else cut what represented his commitment.

And then came one of the saddest lines in Scripture:

“He did not know that the Lord had left him.” — Judges 16:20

That’s what happens when we trade next for now.
We wake up one day blind, bound, and walking in circles — wondering where the strength went.

3. Give God What’s Left

Here’s the good news: God still writes redemption stories.

Even when Samson’s eyes were gone and his freedom was gone — his faith came back.
In the middle of his regret, Samson prayed one last prayer:

“Sovereign Lord, remember me again… please strengthen me one more time.” — Judges 16:28

And with that, he brought down the enemy’s stronghold — accomplishing more in his death than in his life.

God didn’t remember Samson for his failures.
He remembered his faith.

“Samson lived for himself for 29 years, and for God for the last ten minutes — and that’s the version God chose to remember.”

It’s never too late for grace.
Never too late to shift from regret to legacy.
Never too late to start leaving the trail better than you found it.

Legacy Over Regret

There’s a story in Mark 5 about two people Jesus healed — one young and one older.
A 12-year-old girl who represented the future...
And a woman who’d been sick for 12 years — representing the past.

Before Jesus could resurrect the girl, He had to heal the woman.
Before God revives your legacy, He wants to heal your regrets.

Maybe you haven’t lived for legacy — but grace says you can still start today.
It’s not about what’s gone; it’s about what’s left.

So here’s the challenge:
Put your hands on the pillars.
Press into what’s left.
And use every bit of strength you have to leave the world — and your family — better than you found it.

Because it’s never too late to leave a legacy you’ll love.

"GHOST POWER"

We’ve spent the past few weeks diving into the wonderful and weird world of the Holy Spirit—discovering that what seems supernatural isn’t spooky at all. It’s spiritual. It’s powerful. And it’s real.

But here’s the thing about “real.” If you’ve ever been faked out by a counterfeit, you know the difference matters.

The Problem with Dupes

On an IBC tour in New York, I once bought a few “Rolexes” from Chinatown. They looked real—till they weren’t. The band flaked, the face fogged, and the whole thing fell apart fast.

Real Rolexes are built from surgical-grade stainless steel. Every screw is crafted in-house, tested, and refined. Counterfeits? Cheap metal and zero testing.

And the truth is, the devil makes dupes too. Everything the Holy Spirit does, he tries to imitate. Prophecy. Power. Healing. He’ll make it look spiritual, but it’s empty inside—flashy but fake.

That’s what we see in Acts 8 : the real versus the fake. Philip, filled with the Holy Spirit, walks into a city where a man named Simon the Sorcerer had wowed people for years with counterfeit power. But when the real power showed up, it exposed the imitation.

Because fake won’t fix what’s broken. The world is hungry for the real thing—authentic, Spirit-filled, power-backed believers.

1. Let Your YES Be Louder Than the World’s NO

Philip’s story starts in a hard season.

Stephen had just been stoned to death. Saul was tearing the church apart. Followers of Jesus were scattered. And yet, Philip still said yes.

He went to Samaria—a place of resistance—and started preaching Christ. That’s where power showed up. Miracles broke out. People were healed. Joy filled the city.

When the world says no, let your yes get louder.

Hard times don’t just test your faith—they train it.

Think of Corrie ten Boom and her sister Betsie, imprisoned for hiding Jews during WWII. Their barracks were infested with fleas, but Betsie thanked God for them anyway. Later they learned the guards refused to enter because of those fleas—giving them the freedom to pray and preach.

Even in dark, infested places, God moves when we say yes.

2. Stay Humble When God Does Something Bigger Than You

After revival breaks out in Samaria, the apostles in Jerusalem send Peter and John to help. Philip had started it—but God wanted to build on it.

Instead of holding onto his platform, Philip steps back. He doesn’t compete for credit. He cooperates with the Spirit. Simon, the sorcerer, does the opposite. He tries to buy the power of God. He wants influence without intimacy, power without purpose.

But Holy Spirit power doesn’t flow through pride—it flows through surrender.

It’s not for building our platform; it’s for building His Kingdom.

Maybe the greatest miracle in Philip’s story isn’t revival—it’s humility.

3. Let God Fill the Gaps

After revival, the Spirit sends Philip to the desert. From the crowd to the middle of nowhere. From busy to barren.

Sometimes obedience feels like a downgrade. But the road that feels empty might be your divine appointment.

There, Philip meets an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah but missing Jesus in it. Philip explains the gospel, baptizes him, and then—Scripture says—the Spirit carries Philip away.

That’s dunamis—the explosive, supernatural power of God in motion. The same power that healed bodies in Samaria picked him up and placed him in another city.

Sometimes God will send you south when you thought you were supposed to go north.

Because the gaps are where His glory shows up.

The Spirit Still Moves!

If you’re feeling stuck between where you were and what’s next—remember this: If God called you to it, His Spirit can carry you through it.

You don’t need perfect conditions. You don’t need a platform.

You just need a yes that’s louder than the world’s no, a heart humble enough to step back when He moves through someone else, and faith to let Him fill the gaps.

The same Spirit that filled Philip fills you.

The same dunamis that healed the sick and saved a city lives inside you.

So don’t settle for the counterfeit. Don’t chase the dupe.
Ask the Father for the real thing.

“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” — Luke 11:13

Ready to experience Ghost Power for yourself?

Ask Him to fill you.
Say yes. Stay humble. Let the Spirit move you.
There’s more waiting beyond your comfort zone—and the Holy Spirit is ready to carry you there.

HOLY GHOST STORIES | WEEK 3

"WHEN THE SPIRIT SPEAKS"

We’ve been spending this month moving from spooky to spiritual — learning what it really means to live life with the Holy Spirit. Because whether you realize it or not, the spiritual world is always impacting the natural world.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about how the Holy Spirit fills us — how He breathes life into empty places and revives what’s been dead inside of us. But this week, we made a shift. We talked about what it looks like when the Holy Spirit doesn’t just work in us, but begins to move through us.

When Things Get “Weird”

Let’s be honest — sometimes spiritual things feel weird. Maybe you’ve met that one “weird Christian” who made you a little nervous about what the Holy Spirit might do next. (We all have a story or two!)

But just because something is spiritual doesn’t mean it has to be strange. The Holy Spirit may not be normal — but He’s never weird. The Bible shows us that when God’s Spirit starts to move, it often breaks our categories, yet always brings clarity, not confusion.

Spirits Speak More Often Than We Realize

In Acts 16, Paul and Silas encounter a slave girl who could tell the future because she was possessed by a spirit of divination — a counterfeit prophetic spirit. What she said sounded right (“These men are servants of the Most High God!”), but the source was wrong.

That’s a powerful reminder: it’s not always about what’s being said, but where it’s coming from.

From the Garden of Eden to today, spirits have been speaking — shaping thoughts, influencing cultures, and whispering into hearts. The enemy’s strategy isn’t always opposition; sometimes it’s imitation. He loves to mix truth with deception to get us to trust a voice that leads us away from God.

And these voices still speak — through music, media, ideologies, influencers, and the constant noise of culture. That’s why Scripture tells us to “test the spirits” (1 John 4:1). Not every voice that sounds spiritual comes from the Spirit of God.

The Holy Spirit Still Speaks — and He Speaks Through People

The good news? The Holy Spirit also speaks — clearly, powerfully, and personally.

When the Spirit fills us, He brings spiritual gifts — not for show, but for service. The apostle Paul called them manifestations of the Spirit — moments when God’s breath fills human lungs. Sometimes He gives a word of wisdom, a word of knowledge, or a prophetic word that brings encouragement or direction.

And yes — that even includes the gift of tongues, which Paul described both as a personal prayer language that builds faith and a public gift meant to build up the church when interpreted.

These are not strange party tricks; they’re supernatural expressions of a God who still speaks to His people.

Let the Spirit Speak

The world has no problem speaking loudly about darkness — but too often the Church grows quiet about light.

In Acts 16, the demonic spirit was loud while Paul was silent — until he finally let the Spirit speak. The moment he did, freedom broke out.

What if the reason some of us feel spiritually stuck is because we’ve been trying to fight spiritual battles with natural tools? What if God is waiting on us to let His Spirit speak through us — into our homes, our friendships, our workplaces, and our cities?

Paul told Timothy, “Do not quench the Spirit.” In other words — don’t silence what God wants to say. Don’t shut down His voice out of fear, doubt, or the worry of looking weird. When you start responding to His voice, you might get stranger to the world, but you’ll also get stronger in your faith.

The Takeaway

The Holy Spirit wants to speak to you and through you.
He brings truth where there’s confusion, power where there’s weakness, and freedom where there’s bondage.

When the Church lets the Spirit speak — the enemy has no choice but to go silent.

Holy Ghost Stories | The Walking Un-Dead

Perspective Shapes Everything

Have you noticed how the words we use reveal our perspective?
Two people can look at the same situation—and describe it completely differently.

Someone buys a $9 Starbucks and calls it a daily treat.
Someone else calls it financially irresponsible.

One person buys Jordans and says they’re collecting.
Someone else calls it compulsive spending.

Even in marriage:
She says, “Can we talk?” He hears, “You’ve messed up.”
He says, “I cleaned the house.” She says, “You just moved stuff around.”

Same situation—different words.
Because how we describe things always exposes how we see things.

And that’s true about death too.

Hollywood says, “The dead walk again”—and turns it into a horror story.
God says, “The dead live again”—and turns it into the gospel story.

The world sees death as the end.
God sees death as the beginning.

The First Ripple of Resurrection Power

After Jesus’ death, something wild happened:

“The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised… and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.”
— Matthew 27:52–53

Imagine running into someone at the market and realizing, “Wait… weren’t you dead?”

The early church called this “the first ripple of resurrection power.”
When Jesus entered the realm of the dead, He preached to the captive souls and set them free.
When He rose, they rose too.

Resurrection breaks every category we have.
For all of history, people were either alive or dead.
Now—there were people who used to be dead.

Can These Bones Live Again?

Even in Jesus’ day, resurrection was debated. The Pharisees believed in it. The Sadducees didn’t.
But long before that, God had already given the prophet Ezekiel a vision that answered the question once and for all.

In Ezekiel 37, God shows Ezekiel a valley filled with dry bones.
It wasn’t about skeletons—it was about second chances.

These bones represented people who’d been defeated, dreams that had dried up, and hope that had been scattered.
And God asked, “Can these bones live again?”

It’s the same question God still asks us:
Can there be life after loss? Hope after hurt? Purpose after pain?

1. The Holy Spirit Reveals

Ezekiel says, “The hand of the Lord was upon me, and He brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley—it was full of bones.” (Ezekiel 37:1)

God doesn’t sugarcoat reality. He takes Ezekiel on a tour of death—showing him just how bad things are.
Because revelation comes before restoration.

Before God breathes life, He helps us see where we’ve lost it.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t hide what’s broken—He reveals it so He can heal it.

Jesus said, “When He comes, He will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.” (John 16:8)
Conviction says, “You did wrong, but you can be made right.”

Condemnation says, “You are wrong, and you’ll never be right.”

Conviction is a mirror. Condemnation is a magnifying glass.

One leads to change; the other to shame.

The Spirit exposes death before He breathes life.

2. The Holy Spirit Reforms

Once Ezekiel sees the bones, God tells him to speak to them:

“Prophesy to these bones and say, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!’” (Ezekiel 37:4)

Faith speaks to what looks hopeless.
Faith believes God’s word even when it feels weird.

As Ezekiel prophesied, the bones began to rattle and reconnect—bone to bone.
God’s word brought structure back to what was scattered.

That’s what the Spirit does—He reforms before He revives .
He brings things back into order. He sets your life, relationships, and convictions in place so you can stand again.

Before the Spirit fills you, the Word must form you.
The Word gives structure. The Spirit gives strength.

3. The Holy Spirit Revives

Then God says,

“Prophesy to the breath… and say, ‘Come, breath, from the four winds, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” (Ezekiel 37:9)

The Hebrew word for breath is ruach —the same word used for Spirit.
It’s the same breath that filled Adam in Genesis 2, the same breath Jesus gave His disciples in John 20, and the same rushing wind that filled the upper room in Acts 2.

Because God’s Spirit doesn’t just work on things—He wants to move in us.
He told Ezekiel,

“I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live.” (Ezekiel 37:14)

God doesn’t just want to fix what’s broken; He wants to fill you with His Spirit—
to bring you out of your grave, breathe into your lungs, and help you stand again.

When the Wind Blows

Jesus told His disciples, “It’s better for you that I go away; if I don’t, the Helper won’t come.”
He was saying: My presence beside you is good, but My Spirit inside you is better.

Maybe you’ve felt the Spirit working on you—convicting, calling, stirring.
But today, He wants to move in you.
He wants to breathe on your dry bones and fill every place you thought was dead.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead still raises dead things today.
When the wind of the Spirit blows, what once was buried can breathe again.

Reflection

Is there an area of your life that feels like dry bones—something that’s been lifeless for too long?
Ask the Holy Spirit to breathe on it again.
Because when He moves in, dead things live again.

Holy Ghost Stories | A Not So Haunted House

While the world is thinking about spooky things this month, we’re focusing on spiritual things.

Because you’re not a body with a soul — you’re a soul with a body. You’re a spiritual being, and God invites you to live beyond what you can see — to experience life, power, and victory through the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Ghost… or Holy Spirit?

Quick poll: who grew up saying Holy Ghost? And who said Holy Spirit?

For a lot of believers, that phrase brings tension. Not because of how we say it — but because of what we believe about Him.

When it comes to the Holy Spirit, people usually fall into a few camps:

Church-raised: Bring denominational baggage — things you’ve seen, been told, or maybe misunderstood.

New to church: The whole “Spirit” talk sounds strange or even a little spooky.

Unaware: Living as if the spiritual world isn’t real at all.

Over-spiritualized: See everything as supernatural and treat the Spirit like a force to wield instead of a friend to walk with.

This series is for two groups:
The Skeptical — unsure about the Holy Spirit but open to understanding,
and The Spiritually Curious — hungry to experience more of His presence and power.

“For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” — 2 Corinthians 3:6

Without the Spirit, faith becomes dry and mechanical.
With the Spirit, everything comes alive.

Who Is the Holy Spirit?

Jesus said something surprising in John 16:

“It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.”

The Greek word for Advocate is Parakletos — “one called alongside to help.”
He’s not an it — He’s a He.
A Helper, Counselor, Comforter, and Guide.

When Jesus was on earth, His presence was limited to one place at a time. But when He sent the Spirit, His presence became available everywhere and in everyone who believes.

That’s not a downgrade — that’s an upgrade.

God is no longer just with us — He is in us.

1. The Spiritual Is More Real Than the Physical

From the beginning, Scripture shows the spiritual shaping the physical:

“The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” — Genesis 1:2
“What is seen was not made out of what was visible.” — Hebrews 11:3

We are not bodies with spirits; we are spirits with bodies.
Our unseen reality constantly shapes what we see.

And that puts us in the middle of a spiritual war.
Paul wrote that we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against powers and principalities — unseen forces shaping the minds and systems of our world.

Spiritual warfare is less about demons in the dark and more about beliefs in the mind.

Every agreement we make — every thought we accept — opens a door to one kingdom or another.
That’s why Scripture calls lies strongholds. Because what we believe shapes what we become.

2. Spirits Want to Take Up Residence

A 2023 survey found that 1 in 6 Americans believe their house is haunted.
Another poll said 41% believe in ghosts or spirits.

People know — even if they can’t explain it — there’s something unseen.

But while we’re worried about haunted houses,
Jesus warned us about haunted hearts.

In Matthew 12, He told a parable about a spirit that leaves a person, wanders, then returns to find the house empty, swept, and in order. It moves back in — and brings seven friends.

Jesus’ message?
Spirits don’t just want to pass by — they want to move in.

Your life is like a house.
If you neglect it, something else will fill it.

You can clean it up, kick sin out, and still be empty.
Emptiness is attractive to the enemy.

That’s why Jesus doesn’t just want your life swept clean — He wants it Spirit-filled.

It’s not enough to have an empty house.
You need a filled one.

In our culture, the enemy’s possession looks less like horror movies and more like apathy, anxiety, addiction, and deception.
He doesn’t have to shock you if he can seduce you.

3. You Choose Who Gets the Keys

In Mark 5, we meet a man possessed by a legion of demons.
He lived among tombs, chained and tormented — but when he saw Jesus, even ten thousand demons couldn’t stop him from falling at His feet.

And when Jesus set him free, he went from tombs to testimony, chains to freedom, torment to peace.

That story shows a truth we can’t ignore:

Obedience determines ownership.

Romans 6:16 says, “You are slaves to the one you obey.”

Whoever you yield to, you empower.
Every thought, word, and action hands over a set of keys.

So — who has yours?

The Spirit Wants to Dwell, Not Visit

God doesn’t want weekend visitation rights.
He wants the deed.

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” — John 14:18
“The Spirit lives with you and will be in you.” — John 14:17

He doesn’t just want to visit your living room.
He wants to fill every room of your life.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” — Revelation 3:20

The question isn’t if your house will be filled — it’s who will fill it.

When you hand Jesus the keys, He fills you, comforts you, and empowers you — and you’ll never be empty again.

Final Thought

You don’t have to live abandoned.
You don’t have to live afraid of what might move in.
You don’t have to strive to keep your life together on your own.

Jesus doesn’t just want to visit your house —
He wants to move in.

So maybe the real question this October isn’t:
“Is your house haunted?”
It’s “Who have you handed the keys to?”

Live Big 4 | Make Bold Moves

Acts 4:29–31

“And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” — Acts 4:29–30

When the early church faced threats and pressure, they didn’t pray for safety. They prayed for boldness. And when they prayed, the place shook, they were filled with the Spirit, and they spoke God’s word with courage (Acts 4:31).

What Does It Mean to Be Bold?

Boldness is refusing to let fear dictate your actions. It’s stepping beyond the limits of what feels normal or safe. Bold people take risks. Bold people make big moves. And big moves make a big difference.

The first followers of Jesus knew this well. The church exploded from a handful of eyewitnesses to thousands within weeks of the resurrection. They faced resistance, ridicule, and threats — yet they prayed for boldness, not protection.

Biblical boldness is behavior born from belief. We speak boldly about what we believe deeply.

Three Bold Moves from Acts 3–4

1. Meet the Moment with Faith

Peter and John encountered a lame man begging at the temple gate. Instead of offering silver and gold, Peter said:

“In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” — Acts 3:6

Then he reached out, lifted the man up, and watched as his feet and ankles were instantly healed.

Peter didn’t hesitate. He didn’t delay with a promise of future prayer. He believed God could do something right there, right then.

Faith doesn’t wait for perfect conditions — it meets the moment with action.

2. Believe Outside the Box

The miracle happened outside the temple gates. A man excluded by law from worship was included by grace through Jesus.

God isn’t confined to church buildings. He moves in coffee shops, hospitals, schools, and streets. Jesus Himself was crucified “outside the gates” (Hebrews 13:12).

Bold faith steps beyond our boxes and boundaries. It believes that God can work anywhere, through anyone, in ways we never expected.

3. Break the Chains of Approval

Peter and John were arrested, questioned, and commanded to stop speaking the name of Jesus. Their response?

“Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him? We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.” — Acts 4:19–20

Once, Peter had caved to fear and denied Jesus by a fire (John 18). But filled with the Spirit, he now stood with unshakable courage.

We face the same tension today: seek the approval of people or obey God. Boldness chooses obedience over acceptance.

What Happens When You Make Bold Moves?

Broken people are healed.
Crowds hear the message of Jesus.
Opposition rises, but so does the church.
Faith is multiplied, and lives are transformed.

History proves it. William Borden, heir to a massive fortune, gave his wealth away to fund global missions and chose a short, bold life over a safe, wealthy one. His motto: “No reserves, no retreats, no regrets.” His life sparked a generation of missionaries.

Live Big, Live Bold

You will never fulfill your calling inside your comfort zone. The early church turned the world upside down because they refused to live small, safe, or silent.

Bold people make big moves. And bold moves invite God’s big power.

Maybe the reason we don’t see miracles today is because we never step out boldly enough to need them.

It’s time to live big. It’s time to make bold moves.

LIVE BIG WEEK 1 | SEE BEYOND ME

Have you ever outgrown something—like a coat that no longer fits? Growth means leaving the small behind. Spiritually, the same is true: we were never meant to stay small.

God designed us to outgrow small lives, small mindsets, and small impact. The enemy, however, works overtime to shrink us—using lies, culture, and comparison to trap us in survival, selfishness, and scarcity (2 Cor. 4:4).

But God’s agenda is to enlarge us into abundance, love, overflow, and mission.

If You See Small, You’ll Be Small

When Israel’s spies returned from the Promised Land, 10 saw themselves as grasshoppers and spread fear. Only Joshua and Caleb believed God was bigger than the giants.

The difference? Vision.

The wrong lens (ME) exaggerates problems and minimizes promises.

The right lens (GOD) sees possibility, purpose, and legacy.

Your calling will always be bigger than you—because it’s not about you.

Three Vision Shifts to Live BIG

1. From ME to GOD
Stop filtering everything through convenience, fear, and comfort. Your life isn’t just about you—it’s about God’s power, purpose, and promises.

2. From Convenience to Calling
Israel wanted to return to Egypt because it was easier than stepping into their calling. But calling always costs more than convenience.

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” —Jim Elliot

God hasn’t called us to easy—He’s called us to eternal.

3. From Moments to Mission
Fear made Israel trade their mission for the moment. But Joshua and Caleb framed hardship inside God’s bigger story. Don’t burn your oil (time, energy, devotion) on temporary comfort. Invest it in eternal mission (Matt. 25).

The Challenge

What if there’s more for you? What if God is inviting you to see beyond yourself, beyond convenience, beyond this moment?

Like Caleb declared:

“Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” (Num. 13:30)

Step into God’s bigger vision. Live beyond small. Live BIG.

Luke 14:15–23

The Power of the Table

How much of our lives happen around tables? Meals, celebrations, work, studies, conversations, even arguments—all of these happen at the table. It’s where families bond, friendships deepen, and values are passed down. The table isn’t just furniture; it’s a place of formation.

That’s why it’s so powerful that Jesus spent so much of His ministry at tables. In Luke alone, we see Him at or talking about a table sixteen times. He didn’t come to sit on a throne but to sit at a table, sharing meals with broken people, religious people, sinners, and seekers alike. There was always room for one more.

God’s Table Is for Everyone

In Luke 14, while dining at a Pharisee’s house, Jesus told a story about a banquet. The invited guests all gave excuses:

“I bought a field.” → possessions and stuff.
“I bought oxen.” → career and work.
“I just got married.” → relationships and comfort.

None of these things are bad in themselves, but they became idols when placed above God’s invitation. The result? They missed their place at the table.

So the master sent his servant to invite the poor, crippled, blind, and lame. When there was still room, he sent him further—“Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.”

Here’s the good news: everyone is invited. No matter your story, your background, your struggles, or your past—God has prepared a seat for you.

Feasts Are About Feeding Others

Yes, God fills us at His table. But the table is not just about what we get—it’s about who we bring.

If all we ever do is eat, we miss the point. The test of the table is whether we come only to consume or also to contribute.

Consumers ask: What am I getting?
Contributors ask: What am I giving?

At God’s table, you are invited to eat—but then you’re also called to serve. You come empty, He fills you, and then you help others find their way to the same table.

Jesus modeled this with a towel in His hand, washing His disciples’ feet (John 13). The table fills you, but the towel forms you.

No One Gets to the Table Without a Servant

In the parable, no one made it to the banquet without a servant going out to invite them. That’s true for us too—most of us are here because someone invited us, mentored us, or served us.

The reason so many seats remain empty in churches isn’t because people aren’t hungry—it’s because too few are willing to serve. That’s why we at Genesis Church carry towels. Because you serve, marriages are restored, kids meet Jesus, students find purpose, and families are transformed.

There are two ways to wear a towel:

Tucked into your collar: “Serve me.”
Folded over your arm: “I came to serve.”

Which one will you choose?

Living Big Means Making Room

Living big means making sure there are no empty seats at God’s table. It means saying with Isaiah, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8).

When we refresh others, Scripture promises we too will be refreshed (Proverbs 11:25). The table fills us. The towel forms us. And together, we live to make sure everyone has a seat.
